Strategic Hoe: Connections

The hardest part of a relationship is retaining it. You can meet the most important, valuable person and have the most amazing conversation to never speak to them again. When a director from my agency didn’t contact me for two days, I called her. 

I remembered her situation. She is dealing with a significant other with cancer. I genuinely asked her “Is everything okay?” She said “Everything is fine, it’s working…I’m happy he is fighting this. Why is this important to note? Connections shouldn’t be a 24/7 you do something for me, and I will do something for you, there has to be a humane factor in the relationship. How many times have you heard someone in a powerful position only hires and invites a person based on their subjective?

We conversed for 15 minutes while I was working. I’m sure my supervisor thought I was speaking to a friend until she heard me ask about the grants and the past meetings. Long story short, she invited me to go to the US Open with her on Thursday. 

I was shocked. I called to only know how she was and how I am going to stop by her office during my break. When you are looking for connections make sure you are not the person who only shows face when you need something. That’s when you get the delay of email replies, returned phone calls. I have seen this many times and it’s pathetic. People will glance at their phone/computer and turn a blind eye to it because the person always takes and leave. 

She invited me to the US Open because we went out a few weeks ago. We took a walk, went to a restaurant, and then we went chandelier shopping (she’s rich and she wants a diamond one for her third house). I expressed to her the pressure of work and internal hurdles that are due to bureaucracy. She agreed and advised me to make sure if I leave I match the deferred compensation, insurance, and pension plan. 

This happened because I wanted to know if everything is okay with her partner and if she is in the office.
