Evaluation.

This project has helped me achieve so many things in my practice I have been able to teach myself and learn more about light room and photo shop. I have been using the layering technique with the images and also masking bits off to allow other images to come through more. Its really taught me to be patient with technology!

I feel that printing taught me a lot more than usual as there were so many colors to be playing around with and when printing had to make sure they didn't spill onto the portraits on the faces of the models, which meant soft proofing and test strips that i found really useful.

The tutorials really helped me with making decisions and the next path to take, i enjoyed thinking about the possibilities my images could take, and i think i took all the right paths!

What i do feel proud of as well is my ability to illustrate and how far i have came to actually be confident enough to use my drawings in my photography together. I have enjoyed this module with the imaginative construction of making the photographs.

I feel that i could carry on projects like this for my own personal use. I have really enjoyed creating these photographs and i hope you enjoy viewing them.

How well have you realized /achieved your original aims as described in your Statement of Intent?

I feel that my first statement of intent is way off ...

But the one for this project i feel i have gone beyond the statement of intent and created better images than i imagined. This is why i revised the statement of intent. I have used two mediums and layered them together and also followed through with my original statement of intent and used double exposure or layering of two photographs and used portraits with them. I am happy how my project has turned out from the statement of intent as its better, however i do feel with more of a concentrating mind on this project it could of been more and/or i could have more final images.

Which research has had the most impact on the development of your work and why?

Geraldine George is a photographer and illustrator bringing the two mediums together. she was the most inspiration for this project. I wanted to create drawings that fitted with the photograph which i feel i have done.

Andre De Freitas is too a photographer but uses double exposures and layering to create a surreal look to his photography. quite fine arty but always portrait i found his work to be quite captivating and imaginative.

What skills have you gained during this module?

My technical skills have developed really well over this module. Using the phase one camera, and all the different lights in the studio i have built more knowledge up about each light fitting and the strengths of the flash i need. All my images were set at F/8 and at 1/200 of a second. this then gave me the base for the settings and then just fiddled with the flash strengths to get the right amount of light in the photograph.

I also feel that my photo shop skills have come along way then before this module. Learning more about light room and photo shop means i can edit and create more imaginative images now. Before i could only simply change the levels and brightness, but now i have learnt all about layers, masks and history brushes.

How well did you manage your time?

I don't think i managed my time exceptionally well. With all the other projects going on i did get really stressed, and i feel that if this was a project that i could of got on with without the stress of other things i could of produced better and more imaginative images, however i still think my images are constructive and imaginative which fits well to the brief.

What could have improved the outcome of this module?

What could of improved the outcome of this module is my own time management. I feel that i got a little too stressed out with the module and the others that are going on, so did not put my all into it like i usually do.

i also feel that having 6 finals could be better, but unfortunately i could only fit 4 together as it would of looked out of place other wise.

These four are the finals i have chose. The agreement was suppose to be 6 images but the others just didn't go together or even with these four photographs. I am happy with four good photographs instead of 6 images that don't look good together. I'm really happy with the outcome of the images, they work well together as colors and as models. a;l petite and soft faces. I love the make up i have used on each model. It helped make them pop out of the photograph. I don't in anyway think they are drowned out by the background, i think there is enough of everything in the photographs.

This is the set up I used for the studio fair shots. Using two soft boxes at the back of the model helped with the white washed background. I had to have the model quite far forward from the lights in the background other wise I would of had light leak. Using the beauty dish helped with the skin Nd also giving the models beautiful bright eyes.

These are the five different lighting set ups I did for the phase one induction, using different heads and strengths on the flashes I was able to create 5 completely different lighting techniques.

Revised Statement of Intent.

What i want to create is a layered image, infused with photography and illustration together. I want to call the series 'The Flower Fairies'. As a big fan in fairies i want to portray what i think a modern day fairy would look like. Ill use petite blonde and brunette models, with a gentle and peaceful face. I will use studio for the portraits, using a white background, two soft boxes and a beauty dish to help with flawless skin that i want in the photographs.

Ill draw my flowers and wings and then scan them into the computer layering them onto the photograph, and then layering the flower photographs as the backgrounds.

I want it to look simple but in fact a lot of work will have gone into them.

Here are all the image i put together with the illustrations and the flower photographs as the background. It took a lot of time to do all of them so i had to stop myself and make myself choose finals.

When i had my tutorial we agreed on 6 images ... so now the editing down begins!!

These are the images i was playing around to see how i could infuse the flower images into the studio shots. Having used a white backdrop in the studio is mad it easier for me to blend the natural flowers into the background. I tried some with the opacity down, and then some which had no opacity. I personally like them with a bit of opacity not so much that you don't know what it is but so its light and airy, which i want the photographs to be like. I love these photographs and i think its coming together really well.

These are photographs i took of flowers and i want to match them up to my illustrations. after messing around with my photographs on photoshop, i think it would look with the photographs of flowers behind the models. again a lot of photoshopping and a lot of work.

Here are all the illustrations i drew and then scanned in. i wanted different flowers but the same wings, as they were the best ones i could draw. Again all were drew with a black fine liner. All flowers can be selected individually to be layered onto the photographs.

This was one of images with daisy illustrated onto it. I like this look as well as the wings, i think it would be boring if i just had wings on all of the images.

This is a step by step way of layering my wings from a scanned image onto my studio shot. i opened both images in photoshop, and resized them so they were next to each other so they are easier to work with. I then went to the left of the screen and selected the magic wand tool to select only the blck bit of the wings. This is so only the wings will go onto my photograph.

I dragged it onto the studio image and rezied by holding down command and T.

getting the right size and then anngling it the way i wanted it, i went on to the history brush and selceted it, using the histroy brush you have to seect the right size of the brush.

after selceting the size i then clicks on Gemma where i didnt want the wings to be and so it dissapered!

Then i had the last product.

These are my wings i used a black fine liner to get the boldness and the black strikes of the pen. I like that its a 2D image that will be put onto a photographic image. am going to edit it them onto my photographs now.
