Scala dei Giganti ~ Giant’s Staircase 1484-1501

It started by Antonio Rizzo in 1484 and its name derived from the two colossal, far greater than life-size statues by Jacopo Sansovino that were set up on either side of the staircase in 1567.

They depict Mercury, the Roman god of trade, and Neptune, the god of the sea, thereby overtly symbolizing the origins of the wealth of Venice. Equally unmistakable is the Lion of St. Mark over the entrance arch to the loggia. The Scala dei Giganti was the setting for the magnificent inauguration ceremonies of the doge.
