The Nighbrarian

  Nighbrarian [nahy-brair-ee-uhn], noun. *** 1) An amalgamation of "nigh" and "librarian," created to describe one who is close to being, but not yet a librarian; a librarian in training. *** 2) Thea, a MLIS student at University of Washington who primarily reblogs book, library, or equity related things. *** 3) A librarian for whom definitions 1) and 2)  were previously true, but has since graduated and wants to keep her username since it's kind of cool and apocolyptic sounding.

Bloncourt is a Haitian painter and photographer who resides in the suburbs of Paris. Born in the small city of Bainet, in Haiti’s Southeast Department, Bloncourt is a founding member of the Centre d'Art. Besides painting watercolors and frescoes, he also does etchings and drawings.

On Titles for Librarians

I'm curious what other children's librarians thoughts are on using titles with children. I'm a new librarian - and a relatively new adult - and so far I've been introducing myself as, "Thea, the children's librarian here at X." I've noticed some adults - both caregivers and teachers - automatically changing it to "Miss Thea." Now, I am a cisgendered woman, so they're not misgendering me, but there are several reasons I prefer not to use the title, Ms (and especially not Miss/Mrs, as my marital status is irrelevant to my job). a) It belongs to a very binary-gendered system I'd prefer not to perpetuate; I know there's Mx, but I'm not sure whether it not it's appropriative for me to use it, and it's not widely or automatically recognized within that system; b) It places an indication of gender before any other aspect of my person, including my name; c) I know it's supposed to indicate a measure of my authority while in that domain, but in life, power dynamics usually aren't as simple as that (i.e. most people I know refer to their bosses by first name), so I feel like it's just as important for kids to understand respect or authority independently of the title. Any other children's librarians have suggestions for handling this, or other adults that work in a children's setting?

If executives and writers could embrace their black female fan bases, listen to us, write black female characters well and take pride in them, they’d discover a loyal and passionate group who will fight for their show through thick and thin, and more than that, they’ll see their ratings skyrocket. Why? Because there are plenty of black women who have given up on fandom after seeing their favorite character sidelined or done wrong. But fandom is a network. When black female fans laud a show for the treatment of its black leading lady, word gets around. And there are plenty of black women who have left other fandoms, looking for the right show. The one that will take it’s black leading lady seriously. The one that will treat her character with respect. The character that’s truly human, not a stereotype or caricature. The writers who understand that not only is representation important, but that what you do with that representation that matters.

Fey Library Fines

Overdue books are not a matter to be joked about when you borrow from a fey library. If you return your books late, please expect at least one of the following: 

The inability to speak without rhyme until enough time has passed that you can safely ask the librarian on duty if you may again know the beauty of borrowing a book, to be returned on time, “this time I swear!” you proclaim with loud flair.

The inability to read anything at all for a moon cycle. Not simply letters and words defying comprehension, but the actual act of books, signs, and labels conspiring to be seen. They will turn away, fade, make themselves scarce.

Your socks will get wet. Every day. They will not dry properly and will acquire the smell most commonly associated with good cheese and weird shampoo.

Avoid the curses. Mark your calendars and ask for extensions as necessary.
