I just recently saw another post that praised True Beauty for the message of accepting our insecurities and our true selves while at the same time called Lee Suho a boring male lead and I just...
It really struck me the wrong way because I think there’s such true beauty (excuse the pun) in his steadfastness. The thing is— he’s normal— he has his quirks like all of us (like spewing out random facts when he’s nervous with Jugyeong or his dramatics when overthinking). He doesn’t (really) do anything crazy but he’s just a good person. He loves Jugyeong for everything that she is, he helps Sujin when he sees she’s uncomfortable with her father, helps Seojun when his mother needed care, and just overall cares deeply for everyone despite his cold exterior and what he’s been through.
He’s not boring— he’s a complex character but can get overshadowed by the more extroverted characters. But I think it’s such a powerful message that a character like Lee Suho, plagued with loss and loneliness can learn to open up and learn to smile and get close to people again. It means you don’t have to have this extroverted, ostentatious personality to get a happy ending. You just need to be there for the people who need you, be a good person, and you’re truly beautiful. And I love that.
