When the unit secretary/HUC is a float from another unit.
How I eat when we are short staffed and at 5:1 patient: nurse ratio.
When another nurse tries to tell you how to do a procedure "their" way.
As a visual learner, this diagram helps me to understand "what went wrong" when my patient has an abnormal rhythm.
For example:
No P wave: the SA node has failed and the AV node has taken control of HR. When the AV node is firing the rate is between 40-60.
When someone asks if they should dress up as a sexy nurse for Halloween.
Between 0200 and 0400 on shift.
The first time you perform CPR during a code.
Trying to explain to your husband/boyfriend why you had a terrible shift.
The first time you recommend a medication to a physician and he agrees.
The first time you try and hand the physician a sterile instrument.
When a patient says they will "be good" if you take off their restraints.
When the physician wakes your patient up at 0445 to ask if he's pooped.
When you try to put your patient's dentures in for them.
Every time I sign RN after my name, I do a little happy dance in my head :)
When you get Mastisol all over your gloves.
When you CANNOT get the vein to stop bleeding so you can attach the pigtail!
When you walk into the daylight after a 12-hour night shift.
