What does "allora," means?
As an adverb of time it means “then” or “at that time”.
allora vivevo a Roma - I was living in Rome then
la scienza di allora - science at that time
per allora sarà morto - he’ll be dead by then (by then, by that time/day)
In questions, it’s frequently used when you’re waiting for someone to give you a particular piece of information and you’re starting to feel a bit impatient in a non-annoyed way. Imagine being at a restaurant with your friends and one of them exclaims allora, avete deciso cosa ordinare? (so, did you guys decide what to order?) or simply allora? (so?).
allora, hai parlato con Giulia? - so, did you talk to Giulia?
allora, usciamo? - so, are we going out?
allora, che hai fatto? - so, what did you do?
Sometimes allora sounds like/is a question, i.e. allora? Hai parlato con Giulia?
In affermative sentences, allora translates to “so”, “let’s see”.
allora, ho comprato i biglietti e.. - so, I bought the tickets and..
allora, domani a Firenze e poi torno - so, I’m going to Florence tomorrow and then I’ll come back
Other expressions with allora
solo/soltanto allora - only thenproprio allora - right then, at that very momentfino ad allora - until thenda allora - since thenda allora in poi - from then on
