Gold and Silver Pomander, 16th Century
***Pomander - a ball made of perfumes, such as ambergris (whence the name),musk, or civet. The pomander was worn or carried in a vase, also known by the same name, as a protection against infection in times of pestilence or merely as a useful article to modify bad smells. The globular cases which contained the pomanders were hung from a neck-chain or belt, or attached to the girdle, and were usually perforated and made of gold or silver. Sometimes they contained several partitions, in each of which was placed a different perfume.
a new year a new day
littlemissmckinnon:
They had never been close with her mother’s sister and family but with the sudden loss in her life for family Marlene found herself with the urge to connect. It was embarrassing more than it was anything else in the world but yet here she was, in the snowy weather making her way into Diagon Alley. It was a rarity that the sun be out these days it rose the temperatures enough that icicles were starting to melt and if you looked closely enough you could see the sun rays on the untouched snow bank.
She entered the shop, not even sure who she’d find working as she made her way down one of the isles not looking for anything particular. Marlene had a small fortune to her name and working as a Hit Witch had only helped her make more, paying for her way of living without having to touch the savings she had in her Vault.
Coming to the end of one of the aisles she spotted the brunette on the stool and quickly found herself standing a little straighter. “Hello there.” A hand waved awkwardly as she planted her feet a yard or so away from the counter. She couldn’t recall the last time that she had seen her cousin, likely before everything in this war, when her parents had decided that they would not be following the pure blood supremacy way of living. “I’m not sure if you even remember me but I–uh–” Her words froze, suddenly wondering what the hell she had been thinking. “Marlene. And I needed to buy a very late Christmas gift.”
Even though it was a slow day Nicolette couldn't go to the back and start cataloging her new finds when she was the only one in the shop for the day. Instead she used the time to work on her latest novel with the calming notes of classical music playing in the background. Stepping away for a moment to use the restroom after three hours of no customers and because honestly she needed a break from writing. The plot just wasn't shaping up how she wanted and instead of frustrating herself to death she decided it was best to step away for the moment. She heard the distinctive chime of the bell which could be heard anywhere in the store and sighed, of course it had to be then that a customer entered the store.
Finishing up in the restroom she gave herself a once over in the mirror, reapplied a coat of lipstick and stepped out with a fresh smile. Walking over to her stool she sat back down, waiting for the customer to come to her. Most of their clientele preferred not to be hovered over, preferring to browse casually. She didn't have to wait long though as a young woman around her age walked around one of the display cases into her line of sight. In a moment she had already determined the woman's wealth and position in life from the quality of her clothing and the lack of any noticeable ring on her finger. There was something vaguely familiar about her though, a whisper in the back of mind told her she should recognize her. Still she just couldn't place her.
It wasn't until she finished speaking that she realised who was in front of her. Still she wasn't about to let on her that she had only just remembered that the woman in front of her just so happened to be her first cousin. The two were nothing alike as far she knew which was why it quite a surprise to see her in the shop. Nicolette though wasn't one to be rude and considering the last time she'd seen her cousin her hair had still been in metaphorical pigtails she supposed it was time for a reunion of sorts. With a gentle smile she replied, "Marlene, yes of course I remember you. I'd be happy to help you find that perfect belated Christmas gift." Sliding off her stool she walked around the counter to better help, "Now first things first, how are you and who is this for?"

Charity took a deep breath, nodding in response to her before moving swiftly through the crowd. Now, orignially she’d wanted to just apparate the hell out of there and head back to either her flat or Nicolette’s, but that had changed because of the look on her friend’s face. A quite corner was acquired and she settled back against the wall, pressing a cool hand to her own forehead. “Frustrated? What happened? What did I miss?” She hadn’t been paying attention to the rest of the auction after Lucinda had made that daring comment about Remus. Part of her thought it was unfair treatment to the man. He deserved better than being reduced to some sexual deviant.
Somehow they'd been able to find an alcove to talk in and once they sat down in the comfortable chairs there she left out a huge sigh. "I don't know where to begin. I feel ridiculous complaining about it, but I can't help how frustrated I am!" Amelia had wanted to win Kingsley awfully badly that it was all she could think of. Were they a couple? Did she want to be a couple with him? Had Nicolette been reading her all wrong? Recently it had seemed like there might be something between them. Perhaps that was just her wishful thinking though.

sapphic moodboard - violets. A popular practice in the 1910′s to 1950′s, bisexual women and lesbians used to give violets to the woman they were wooing, symbolizing their “Sapphic” desire.
■ make me choose challenge: Durmstrang or Beauxbatons [Bo - batton]
Thought to be situated somewhere in the Pyrenees, visitors speak of the breath-taking beauty of a chateau surrounded by formal gardens and lawns created out of the mountainous landscape by magic. Beauxbatons Academy has a preponderance of French students, though Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Luxembourgians and Belgians also attend in large numbers (both Beauxbatons and Durmstrang have a larger studentship than Hogwarts). It is said that the stunning castle and grounds of this prestigious school were part-funded by alchemist gold, for Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel met at Beauxbatons in their youth, and a magnificent fountain in the middle of the school’s park, believed to have healing and beautifying properties, is named for them.
Beauxbatons has always enjoyed a cordial relationship with Hogwarts, though there has been a healthy rivalry in international competitions such as the Triwizard Tournament, in which Beauxbatons has sixty-two wins to Hogwarts’ sixty-three.
Apart from the Flamels, famous ex-students of Beauxbatons include Vincent Duc de Trefle-Picques, who escaped the Terror by casting a concealment charm on his neck and pretending that his head had already been cut off; Luc Millefeuille, the infamous pastry-maker and Muggle-poisoner, and Fleur Delacour, who fought in the world-famous Battle of Hogwarts and was awarded medals of bravery from both the French and British Ministries of Magic. Headmistress Olympe Maxime is (in spite of her protestations to the contrary) half-giantess; brilliant, elegant and undeniably awe-inspiring.
