My Experience at UNIQLO SM
My family often buys UNIQLO products, especially Heattech items. Since my elder brother always want to buy heattech and other clothes in UNIQLO so my mom and i also started to love purchasing their items specially the heattech.
One time, I bought items online through their app for pick-up at the SM Fairview branch. When the pick-up day arrived, I was informed to show the email about my order, which said to present the QR code upon claiming. When I got there, I presented the email and the QR code as instructed. However, the staff who was stationed there still asked me several questions like what item I was going to pick up and what my name was. I was already tired from work and just wanted to pick up my order. Of course, that order was already paid upon checkout, so I thought that if I didn’t pick it up that day, I might forget or not have free time to claim it later.
I felt offended by the way they treated me because the email clearly stated that I only needed to show the QR code, which I did—so what’s the big deal? 😅 After receiving my box of items, I noticed that a security guard followed me until I exited the premises.
Then recently, since we had to travel abroad and needed Heattech for my mom too, my elder brother told me to go to the UNIQLO SM Fairview branch. When we entered, it was already around 10:15. A sales clerk greeted me and my mom, and my mom asked where the Heattech section was. She’s already a senior citizen, and there are times she experiences pain in her knees, so she asked right away.
The clerk told us that we could save more (“makakamura”) if we bought a kids’ size since they only had the Ultra Warm type of Heattech available at that time. So, we decided to go to that section, and the clerk continued to assist us. However, we found out that there was no kids’ size that would fit my mom, so we decided to buy the women’s medium instead. The clerk told us that he would be the one to get the item for us.
That was when I noticed that their security guard (I’m positive it wasn’t an SM security guard since this one was wearing a blue or whitish polo) was following us wherever we went. Even after the clerk finished assisting us and my mom wanted to look for pants, the security guard was still following us. Then I saw another clerk who seemed to notice it too—when he saw me looking at him and then at the security, he said “Ayy” and looked at me. I felt like we were already being branded as shoplifters in that store.
I then proceeded to the cashier for payment. The cashier, who was still assisting another customer, asked if we were going to pay in cash. We said yes, and she called her colleague to assist us with the payment. I found it weird that someone could be branded as a shoplifter even when they weren’t doing anything wrong. For the record, why would I do such a thing?
Is it because I was wearing non-branded clothes? I was just wearing a Zanzea blouse, my old black Skechers shoes, and simple eyeglasses from EO Optical—not shiny or stylish, but still decent. Is there a dress code when shopping at that UNIQLO? In Japan, I never experienced such treatment, and even in other branches like UP Town Center, it was never like this. I felt anxious and, of course, angry because other customers might also think that we were shoplifters. I just want to release these frustrations and since I am an anxious and introverted person I feel like I need to release it to avoid worrying and all or probably others might enlighten or give me tips on how to buy things there.
