i would say "if anything happened to nikki i'd kill everyone in the room and then myself" but things have already happened to nikki before i knew her so-- (main: @phosphophylight-of-my-life)
Shi Gandang's Chinese dub is really good. (Infinity Nikki 2.2 spoilers)
edit: okay i went to listen to the EN and JP dubs for this scene, and you've GOT to play the CN dub for this. Turn on CN dub when you get to the treasure hunter's camp.
Fun fact: The original Chinese script sells Shi Gandang's desperation much stronger than the EN translation does. More nerd stuff under read more.
Official EN: It's okay... I... I can fix this! Maybe my craftsmanship isn't as good as my sister's, but I'll still fix it... I have to fix it!
Shi Gandang doesn't just say he has to fix the cauldron (得), he uses 非得 which means he absolutely, absolutely has to fix it. Failure is not an option because the consequences would be unacceptable.
So a more faithful translation might be:
It's okay... I can fix this, I can definitely fix this! Even if my craftsmanship isn't as good as my sister's, I still can... I have to fix this!
The repetition of "I can fix this!" kills me, guys. He's trying so hard to convince himself that he can do it, because failure is not an option and the very real possibility that he will fail scares him so much.
The translation for the next line is also not the best.
CN: 我能想办法补好的。就石匠的时候,一开始调一个“我”的时候,不也是一样一重莫展的吗?
Official EN: I can fix this. Back when I was a stonemason, when I first tried to sculpt a self-portrait "me", I felt just as lost.
My TL: I can still find a way to fix this. Back when I was a stonemason and first tried sculpting a self-portrait, wasn't I also at a complete loss like now?
Shi Gandang says "我能想办法", which means "I can think of a way to fix this" -- meaning he doesn't even have the faintest clue how he will go about fixing it. It connotes a degree of helplessness much more severe than the official TL implies, because he doesn't just need to "fix" it -- he needs to also figure out how to fix it in the first place. Poor lad has his work cut out for him.
In the last sentence, he also uses an idiom that google translate tells me means "completely at a loss", which. is obviously more serious than just "lost". I must say however that this is really hard to translate. Chinese people just love using difficult metaphors in daily speech, while English speakers just. don't do that, generally speaking. I certainly cannot think of an equivalent word or short phrase that conveys the severity without also making Shi Gandang sound like a dofus using flowery metaphors at a critical moment when his mind is overridden with panic.
But the original CN script also uses sentence structure to convey Shi Gandang's mental state in a way that the EN TL doesn't. The last sentence in this line ("aren't I just as lost as I was back then?") is a rheatorical question, obviously meant to comfort himself. "Hey, remember that you've been this lost before! It'll be fine, right? It'll be fine!! (Right??)"
Shi Gandang tries to comfort himself much more obviously in CN, to obviously little effect. Poor guy.
absolutely love that there are 2 quests with limited-time rewards that require you to unlock Path of Practice, but nowhere in the game tells you how to do that
i think the reason why i don't enjoy IN as much as i did SN is, unfortunately, precisely because it's open world.
being open world means that the primary view we have of nikki is from the BACK, not the front.
in contrast, when running dailies in SN you would keep going back to the home page which has nikki's FRONT view. if you have paid for animated home page poses, you get an even better view.
In IN, you have to work hard for every pretty pose. you don't see it every day when you're logging in for that 5 mins for dailies.
the new world quest requires smudge fin, so i open pear pal guide to find it, only to be created by a 40min mega guide for all resources with no timestamps. i try to google and find a single picture of the map with a pin and find nothing. i find a single webpage telling me that it's in the rivers and lakes of elderwood forest, and it's COMMON, so i walk the entire length of the river there and fish every single fish i come across, and find only brushers and carver fishes. okay.
