went to a new optometrist today wearing my squid facts ‘save our freaks dont mine the deep’ shirt from @sarahmackattack that has a strawberry squid on it. and i wasn’t even thinking about it but the optometrist walked in and he was like ‘oh what does your shirt say’ so i showed him and he was like ‘oh that’s neat!’ and then i thought he might like to know about strawberry squid eyes since they have weird eyes and he is an optometrist and all. so i was like ‘yeah it’s actually a real kind of squid called a strawberry squid, their eyes are really cool because they have one big yellow-green one and one small blue one’ and he kind of gasped and went ‘oh my god that’s so interesting i wonder why they have that. do you know what their retina composition is like?’ and i watched as he minimized my chart on the computer and started looking up images of strawberry squid and then he googled ‘strawberry squid retina composition’ and he was like ‘sorry we’ll get to your eye exam in a moment i just really want to find out’ LMAO 10/10 optometrist experience will be returning

Okay but if anyone's actually having troubles reconciling multiple conflicting ideas that they like for a fictional character, like the whole "Ryland Grace is somehow aroace and in a polycule with Rocky and Adrian and very gay for Simon Ironlung" thing to where it's not meshing together as like, well with the power of queerness anything is possible, but just like, but surely I must pick one?

You don't have to actually do that. The beautiful thing about fictional characters and the whole business about them being tools of a narrative, is that you do NOT need to concretely decide anything about them outside of the confines of whatever story you want to tell today. Multiple conflicting ideas about the same blorbo never actually need to settle into one definitive verdict. I mean it's fine if they do, but it's not required.

And in fact it's usually a good idea if you like to create things for you to practice switching between several mutually exclusive possibilities. Not only is it good creative practice, it also keeps you from getting so stuck in a single concept of an idea that you become hostile to conflicting opinions.

Ok so I totally fell down the Iron Lung/Project Hail Mary rabbit hole, and let me tell you I am having an absolute blast.

The art is amazing, the themes are immaculate, and shoving two pathetic traumatized men at each other in an enclosed space is always a great time.

The ones where Grace & Rocky have to purposely choose to step into the horror genre in order to pull Simon out of it are so so SO good.

But I also love that 60% of the fics start with Grace being just absolutely flabbergasted because that's... that's a SUBMARINE. What is a submarine doing in deep spac- THAT'S A PERSON!! WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH!!! WHAT IS A HUMAN PERSON WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH DOING IN SUBMARINE IN DEEP SPACE??!?!??!
