can you guys like. Breathe for a second and stop acting like rebecca sugar thinks either pink diamond or spinel is just a villain. because believe it or not, she can acknowledge their toxicity without erasing their victimhood. they’ve talked about the sympathetic and innocent aspect of these characters.

it’s just that, when writing characters you expect a fandom to emotionally connect with, it doesn’t hurt to balance that picture by reminding folks that you can still be toxic towards others. it’s a balancing act.

both are characters who have suffered a fair amount of abuse, then had a spiral of toxic behavior, then worked their way out of that spiral to make things better. those spirals are pretty common. what SU is offering is first and foremost a way out, hope that the existence of such spirals doesn’t bar you from recovery.
