i never read homestuck but what retcon?

ohhhh anon don't get me started lmaoo

(also explaining this for those of u that dropped hs and didn't know)

basically after 3 to 4 real life years of following characters with specific storylines and relationships and issues, a character goes back in time to undo that, wiping it all out of existence in one single update and replacing it with different versions that existed in a timeline we didn't even get to see if not through a brief slideshow!

ALL this just so the author could bring back to life their fav character and troll everyone, don't make me think of this I legit still remember the list of all the bs that was handwaved in the process (there's literally a character saying "real people don't have character arcs" as a way to excuse giving up on actually writing the character arcs)

but if u read the whole story in a few weeks it's probably not as noticeable, but witnessing it in real time was ass, especially if you had no interest in the ships the retcon was pandering to, and then we were stuck with the retconned version of everything for the rest of the story hence why I didn't care for any of it

aw thank youu! and for anatomy when I got into vld I leaned a bit more into realistic proportions, I distinctly remember not knowing how to draw a more proper shoulder frame or a jawline before then, but I think drawing characters from any series with more realistic proportions can help with that, also looking at how other artists stylize anatomy as well as photos!

perspective is something that can get easier once you know more anatomy because it's about tweaking the proportions you already know

I've seen artists pull off entire scenes from imagination in perspective where what matters is that you get a good visual result rather than using perspective lines, as they can result in something stiffer or less personal, but because that can be hard to do, you can look up how to use perspective grids or vanishing points!

and I haven't had any specific moments that were game changers or anything, tho I'll say running the sus tier on ptrn for a while now I think made it flow better, it's not as "scary" to tackle and I tend not to overthink it as much in general haha (but it mostly applies to a specific set of proportions and for example it has no impact on my more cartoony stuff and some other art I make)

only Dirk and Jake when I have time! everyone else commission only, I lost interest in the other characters when the retcon happened so I never really felt like revisiting them

What programs do you use for drawing?? Any tips on shading as well? I love your shading style!

still SAI! my default shading for a lot of things is pretty straightforward, you just need a brush with density that responds to pen pressure and I blend out certain parts by using the same brush as an eraser (it's the little transparency toggle, CSP has it too)

so there's usually one color for shadows and sometimes one for highlights but not always

other pics where I get more experimental with the coloring like the latest one have more misc brushes and textures or various blend modes on them, and I keep trying until I like the result so idk how to explain😅

HIIIII first off I love ur art sm bro the colors the shading the literally everything is the peakest of peakkkkkk but I was especially wondering how you do your lineart? speaking as a digital artist who canNOT for the life of them find a good brush or technique or anything, searching online has not helped, and since your lineart is next level I was wondering if you had any tips for both actually drawing the lineart and finding a good brush for it? we probably use different drawing software (I use procreate) so I'm not asking for a specific brush, just like should I look for anything in particular, like stroke correction or opacity or whatever settings/attributes? realizing this is a lot of info I'm asking for lol sorry about that, tysm your art is like in my top 3 most inspirational styles it's sooooo good!!!!!

(ps I got into tadc right around the same time I found your art so now all your tadc stuff is tied directly to the show in my brain, atp your fanart is basically canon in my head lmao. I think I actually found one of your human ver designs somewhere wayyy before I'd even heard about tadc but I remember seeing it cause I was like "who are these beautiful divas :O")

the thing is I don't exactly lineart? mostly I just do sketchy lines, then add the coloring and might clean up the lines further depending if I'm going for a more polished look! I never liked doing lineart but I fell into the habit of doing it since it streamlines comic coloring process, but even then it's the same couple of brushes I use for sketching

I draw in SAI so it's the default brush and an edit of the default brush but with more paper texture lool

I always keep the density at 80-90% since I want the lines to have less opacity and manually go over which parts I want to be more defined

in general if you want to do something adjacent to cell shading you can use bolder lines and 100% opacity, if you plan on doing softer shading or paint over, the lines just need to give the general idea bc they might end up edited or deleted later anyway

I don't know about any of the fancy settings, sorry 😭 tho I think there are brushes that respond well to pen pressure/line speed etc in procreate and CSP, but largely depends from your drawing method, they tend to be very texture-heavy brushes but I usually don't go there so I got no recs
