I think a lot of my frustration with Neopets’ management right now is that they like… don’t know who their target audience is or how to interact with their audience at all. On one hand they clearly try to cater to kids……… too much, to the point that they baby them. Recent content is embarrassingly half-assed 99% of the time (the 1% being when it’s used with an artist’s permission at best, such as the maraqua lutari, and straight up stolen at worst). Their apps seem like they’re written for an extremely young audience. But at the same time they’re clearly trying to entice older fans as well. “Limited edition” merch, engagement with fan Discords and other social media stuff, comic con events… They like, are aware of the fact that they have a huge (probably predominantly at this point) older fanbase, but they also are constantly trying to half-ass stuff with this claim that it’s a kid’s site first and foremost. The worst of this comes out when you see shit like the stolen art, like I mentioned prior, or the fact that stuff like LGBT content is still somehow a grey area to discuss at best on the site.

I think what frustrates me about this the most is that old Neo/the Neo that I grew up with and love and feel so much nostalgia for never really had that problem. Neo was always really good at making sure that their content was child-friendly while not “babying” their child fans. The art was quality and only tended to improve over time, the lore and plots and events were exciting and well-written for all ages, games like The Darkest Faerie still hold up and lots of people remember it as one of the scariest games they played as children (which is a good thing!). The site had varying levels of difficulty, kids could take it easy with simple games and objectives like saving up for paint brushes or challenge themselves to harder things like getting rare pets or trophies, avatars ranged hugely in difficulty, etc. Rereading old Neo lore makes me so nostalgic and even more frustrated with where the site is now. It’s like it’s dumbed down to the point that any child would feel patronized (let alone the adult players), while at the same time most of the site “outreach” is centered on adults/older fans. So in the end it feels like current TNT is just looking out at the small group of adults still hanging onto their site for nostalgia’s sake and speaking to them in baby talk while stealing their content lol. Personally I think Neopets should always remain a “kid’s site,” or at least an “all ages friendly” site, because that’s always been the spirit of Neo. But that’s NEVER meant that Neo couldn’t be fun and engaging and actually have effort put into it… until very recently, it feels.
