Not a fan of the Baelia / Iridesia thing tbh but I’m also kinda just done with Neo as a whole rn. Plot completely killed interest in the site for me ngl 😭 I’m sure I’ll be back I always end up returning lmao but man…

Some more Neopets art from the backlog :)
Honestly I’ve seen some people theorizing and I would not be mad if TVW ends up being a Faerie Fragments onsite tie-in (I mean it obviously already kinda is with Luxinia being there) and they add “New Faerieland” to the map of Neopia as a new location that plays into the nostalgia players have for Faerieland when it was in the sky. Altador came about the exact same way back in the day (it was a Darkest Faerie tie-in; TDF is obviously a better game by arguably any metric than FF but the precedent is there and it’s a largely inoffensive thing to do I think. if anything despite how much I love TDF it being a game you had to purchase whereas FF being free makes this a more widely accessible crossover between the two medias).
anyone else remember the Animal Crossing x Neopets collab back in the days?

Having to solve a 200 piece puzzle just to advance the plot’s story is kind of insane lmao but honestly I don’t hate it.
Anyway I know ultimately it’s not that serious. I admittedly just like talking about the creative process since I am a creator myself & it’s interesting to see storytelling crash and burn the way TVW has so I’m largely just thinking out loud for my own selfish benefit when I talk about this stuff lol. “Why is this not working” is a meaningful conversation for me to have with myself :-)
neopets team i understand where you're coming from but with the scale of gameplay and design you've actually ended up making here i would not have admitted to any of these if you put a gun to my head
Okay I know this is largely just me being a hater but I keep thinking about this particular question/answer from Jellyneo’s interview with TNT about The Void Within. Admittedly as a writer myself I just find it fascinating. The Void Within’s story is pretty unbearably bad imo, and I know I’m far from the only person to think this. I have seen little to no praise for literally any aspect of it at all. Listing THIS MANY inspirations, especially such… ambitious? ones, for something that has amounted to a handful of characters with nearly 0 individual characterization sitting around in various rooms and talking about their feelings followed by a couple of mundane puzzles or action sequences is really fascinating to me. I think it just really speaks to a really amateur writing process. Like, really amateur.
Is it possible to have “two many” influences on a work of art? Not… necessarily. A very good artist can draw from a shitload of sources and combine a bunch of things that inspire them into something new. But I also think that most good artists… don’t? At least it’s a very particular writing style that would take a lot of intentionality to pull off. I mean, there is something to be said in restraint, right. Especially because part of the creative process is inevitably going to involve taking all those inspirations and elevating them, or otherwise incorporating them into your own ideas as well. As it stands The Void Within is literally not long enough or complex enough or well made enough on any level to adequately take inspiration from (deep breath) Gravity Falls Over the Garden Wall Avatar: The Last Airbender J.R.R. Tolkien Terry Pratchett Lovecraft Guillermo del Toro Horizon Zero Dawn Slay the Princess God of War Ragnarok Pokemon.
Within the context of what The Void Within actually amounts to that is a meaningless list. And I think it speaks to a harsher truth about TVW’s writing, which is that it is so devoid of original thought or a personality of its own. You can tell me that this story takes inspiration from a dozen different IPs but nobody can articulate with confidence a meaningful major character trait or conflict for a single one of the protagonists. It’d be hard to even articulate a single meaningful story beat. And it’s been going on since 2023. I’m also kind of fascinated by the fact that I don’t think any of the above IPs they claim to take reference from really… is reflected by TVW, anyway? And like, it’s fine to take inspiration from eclectic sources OF COURSE, but where is absolutely any of this within the story we actually got? Do we really need to say that a Neopets story (which has been a largely high fantasy fictional setting with established lore since its advent in the late 90s) needed to be inspired by Tolkien…? Like, you’d think that something more like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (high fantasy with tech-as-needed, fantasy animal protagonists, predominantly female-led cast, balances external conflict and action/adventure elements with social/emotional interpersonal conflict… I mean My Little Pony: The Movie feels like pretty much exactly like what TVW is going for) or Steven Universe (pretty similar, but also includes a more explicit science-fantasy aspect with things like dark magical corruption / G-rated cosmic horror l that think really mirrors some parts of TVW) would be more apt than like. God of War Ragnarok LOL.
Anyway. Admittedly more than anything like I said I just kinda found this fascinating as a writer myself. Thinking about how to balance inspiration from preexisting art and media with original story is just a genuinely interesting topic without any easy answer but surely this is an example of how not to do it. I mean obviously it’s context-dependent. Venture Bros is one of my favorite shows of all time and it takes inspiration from a million different IPs but it’s also an episodic parody / comedy show with 80 episodes. But I think what interests me in particular about this list really is just the way it feels within the context of what The Void Within has actually presented so ridiculously hollow. You can name so many pieces of media that inspire you but the final product reflects pretty much none of them at all. It lacks substance. It doesn’t really feel like there is anyone on the team who cares for Nyx As A Person, or otherwise there isn’t anyone on the team who is capable enough as a writer to communicate it. It’s just a scattered collage of loosely-connected IPs jumbled together. Vague concepts without a real through line.
yellow kacheek, aka John Neopets to me
I don’t want to hear anything about The Void Within again I am so sick of that ugly blue Aisha and her baby Yoda ass Faellie
Unrelated but I also just really like how I’ve customized a lot of the companion characters on Faerie Fragments lmao
Does Neopets have a writing team? Who writes their scripts for… everything?? (TVW, Faerie Fest, Neggfest, the new minigame collection, etc etc etc)?? It’s just so toneless and bland. Any intrigue any of them could possibly have gets lost because the way everyone talks just causes my eyes to glaze over. Always feels like it’s for very very young kids and even then it wouldn’t be very good. Surely they could hire a couple of writers. Weirdly enough I actually think their mobile apps have the best writing in terms of unique characterization and intrigue at the moment, and that isn’t saying all that much. But I do feel like I at least “know” and “like” Faerie Fragments characters like Varia and Tia. I haven’t played much of Tales of Dacardia because I kinda can’t stand that type of game but I felt similar with it—I liked characters like Dr. Ariel and Lania. Can’t really say the same about a single Void Within character. It drives me nuts lol.
Ringdropp has a special look for April 1st :-) I plan to make a permanent Chomby with this NC Style after but for the day I feel like it’s funny to make my active pet look like this LOL. 😭
