The shoe came down with a heavy thud against the ageing wood, a definitive slam. The rat simply scurried away.
Florian sighed and, muttering curses about rats finding their way into places they shouldnât be, yanked his shoe back onto the right foot. He narrowed his eyes at the hole the rodent had disappeared into.
âThatâs right, coward- you run. Iâll get you one of these days.â he turned- and let out a startled noise when he realized he wasnât quite as alone as heâd thought.
Nik let out a small laugh when Florian made his weird noise âFloorman Iâm not even sure what that noise was. But I like and you should do it again.â He paused a moment with no indication that Florian was going to make the strange noise again Nik proceeded âI think you got a rat problem. I am here on behalf ofâŠthe great and wondrous Nikolas Locke to help you catch and cook the rat.â He said as a matter of factly. Like he wasnât lying through his teeth
Florian wasnât sure which twin he was speaking to, but he smiled at them, all the same.
âFound the filthy rodent in my things again, this morning,â he told Nik (or Kit? It didnâtâ matter), his hands braced on his hips as he examined the ratâs hole in the floorboards, âIt got into my stash of ginger.â
His gaze slid towards the other boy as he said, unsure, âI donât think I could cook a rat.â He gestured with his hands as he spoke, as if to illustrate his point, âThe meat is probablyâŠstringy, hard to cook. Not very nutritious.âÂ
NIk shrugged âI suppose you know better than I do when it comes to cooking.â
âHowever I think that we could be doing better things than chasing rats through the deck of the ship.â He took Florian by the arm and started leading him out from the kitchen and then stopped abruptly âWAITâ he took florian by the shoulders and looked him right in the eyes. His nose practically touching Florianâs âI need a bread. That you cooked. Specifically your bread. Bread made by you. Got it?â
Florian blinked in surprise and jerked backwards, although he didnât get very far with Nik gripping his shoulders. He smiled nervously.
âAre you sure you want some bread? Supper is in a few hours and you probably shouldnât spoil your appetiteâŠâ Florian trailed off as he realized the boy didnât necessarily want his bread for eating, considering the way the crew complained about his baking. âI burnt a few loaves. Theyâre over there.â He gestured to a small pile of questionable-looking loaves, his tone defeated.
âAh! shukraan lika, hulwat kaekat alqarfa!â He smiles and grabbed one bread testing it briefly. He tossed one to Florian âthese are perfect.â He took off his shirt then. âAlright now then we have a mission, that is to infiltrate the captains quarters and find her left boot. Letâs go.â
