Harvey is one half of the Sinclair twins (Barnaby is the other one, I'll do a post about him later hehehehe). They're both from one of my personal stories called "Letty Sugar" for short. I'm still working a longer title that rolls of the tongue.
ANYWAY, we love a good villain!
He and his brother were orphaned at a very young age and adopted by a couple named Seraphina and Xerxes, whom we will call Mother and the Father for simplicity's sake cause that a whole other can of worms that I haven't talked about. As they grow older they find that they have some mystical innate ability and the Parents are like oh shit we can use (exploit) this.
Harvey's ability was to write stories that mysteriously come true and Father was like I'm gonna need you to write some stuff that helps my plan come to fruition, but first we're gonna need you to get more powerful. Who doesn't love a good lab testee backstory? So Harvey (and Barnaby!) get the works and they're like this sucks and escape when they're around about 15-ish. And they manage to evade Father for a good while.
Unfortunately during this time, Harvey actually wants to get more powerful, but the only way to do so is to keep writing until he's able to affect the future at a more effective scale. So how about killing Mother? So he writes and writes and writes, days, months, weeks, years. Until one day he gets to see Mother for the first time in 5-6 years and her body is fucking ravaged, emaciated even from disease and injury. As the brothers "say goodbye", they bury Mother and hope to god Father doesn't find out it was Harvey that did it.
Unfortunately...
Father does manage to catch up to them and, to Harvey's surprise, he's like, it's gucci (except in like 1900's speak?) however, and fucking blasts Harvey's eyes out.
Oh yeah Mother and Father are demigods, hehe.
So Harvey is blind and both he and his brother are back at "Home" where Father is back on his bullshit with the lab testing. Father had found a connection between Mother and Harvey that allows her to sort of "live" through him and share powers. (This is the basis of the Children of the Seraph, which I'll talk about later, I have MANY thoughts about this world). So this incident basically unlocked his ultimate and now he can just say stuff and it comes true, similar to Mother. But during the process, he "rejects" her and """kills""" her basically keeping his power.
And then he blows up the place <3. I love that for him!!!!!
So now, he and his bother are kinda sorta on the run, but Harvey's having a grand old time with his power and constantly seeks more and more of it through any means necessary. In their new lives as they settle in Buttonborough (the city of the plot), Harvey now goes by Miles Abbott, a mild-mannered radio host.

Prior to the main story of fmab, Rory was a traveling doctor in a small town in Amestris with his son, Willem. His wife died from childbirth complications, so he's Single Dad Doing His Best. He did house-calls mot of the time so he could have more time to spend with Willem a he grew up.
However, when Willem was around 6, he fell incredibly ill, and Rory had no idea what the disease could've been (this was like late 19th century it could've been anything, really). He treated him as best he could, but unfortunately, Willem passed. However, Rory refused to let go, as he was his child and basically the last remnant of his wife.
I actually wrote short stories for him so I'm referencing that as I type, but I think his dialogue can really sell what happened:
In summary: He committed the Taboo™ using his son's corpse, got fucked up, and lost a hefty part of his heart as a sacrifice.
Moving up to about mmmmmm a few years prior?? to canon, Rory was goaded requested to work on some experimental techniques to buff up the military after the ceasefire at Ishval left Amestris a bit dented. This came from Bradley obvi.
Rory, beforehand, was admitted to be a State Alchemist because his alchemic studies (which had a focus on calcium materials and bones) could be quite useful, and was given the title "The Bonesaw Alchemist".
He thinks it's fucking stupid, and also doesn't like to be referred to as Major.
Bradley, essentially was like, hey listen bud. I want you to live your best life by making our soldiers better. You're a doc, that's your prerogative, go do it *wink wonk*. That winkwonk implying make something useful out of the leftover philosopher's stone we have.
Rory, regrettably, does it. Because! He also was a part of the Ishvalan sacrifices, but managed to escape without being killed for, y'know, being there. So stepping out of line in Bradley's eyes is the last thing he wants to do.
You remember those weird, pasty zombie things that are at the bottom of Central?

So Rory essentially made the first prototype of those guys. He took some of the stone liquid from the Fifth Laboratory and injected it into the dead bodies of soldiers from the war that were too mangled for an open casket. Fucked, right? It gets worse.
His planned experiment was to see if a higher amount of calcium can harden the skin overall, giving something shell-like for additional protection. What he got was a mangled, stone white corpse with the voice of his son screaming for help.
So he went back to Bradley and was like "Mmm, I'll pass."
(What he didn't know was that his studies would be passed along to the bowels of Central where they would be mass reproduced)
Now we're up to canon and his story falls somewhere close to Ed and Al, though he has bouts with Scar for a different reason (which deals with my friend's fma oc and makes me go teehee :] )
But here's some more fun facts about him that I couldn't fit into above:
He's prone to fainting. A lot.
Because of his small heart, anything above a certain level of his (very low) blood pressure makes him hit the floor, ragdoll style. Sometimes he might need to run somewhere, but as soon as he gets there, it's over. A particularly notorious one is where he was getting his state alchemist stuff officiated, and upon receiving his stuff, he just dropped. In front of Bradley. So yknow. Fortunately, he's quick to recover, so just give him a minute, he'll be fine.
He smokes.
He really shouldn't!!!!!!!!! But you know.
He worked with Knox a lot of the time once he's at Central.
He finds Knox okay to work with, but it's also like two grumpy, sad men in the same room together. The vibes in the doctor's office are off. But once Knox leaves, he moves over to strictly autopsy.
His Alchemic language is recipes of food Willem loved.
