Imagine:
Pearlcatchers who lost their pearl that keep producing the slime for it. The slime drools from their mouth, coating their teeth… It keeps flowing, flowing, flowing…
Their teeth grow a little bit every day. Shined by the black liquid constantly spewing from the dragon’s mouth. Their teeth eventually fuse, growing into massive, deformed fangs that are made of pure, opalescent pearl.
IMAGINE.
Soon after this stage, the growth becomes uncomfortable and then painful, causing the afflicted find stones or other such things to wear them down. The constant irritation has been known to make them violent or even hostile until, some way or another, the fangs grow too large, piercing the skull and killing the dragon.
And PCs know this! Think about it, all PCs do the same thing even if they have a pearl still. I bet that goop gets stuck in their teeth all the time!
So maybe PCs invented ways to keep their teeth clean through certain herbs or scrubs and need to keep up with a consistent dental regime to avoid such a fate.
Imagine the bad stigma between PCs when they see another PC with pearlescent teeth (sign of poor hygeine) but I’d imagine it’s unavoidable in elderly PCs.
