'cause you’re a lullaby playing through the tragedy
I’ve been seeing a few friends on Facebook post/repost this status on their walls, and have been thinking about posting my own too. Since this isn’t going on my Facebook wall, I added back stories on why they made it on my list. Here goes.
List 10 albums that made a lasting impression on you as a teenager, but only one band per artist. Don’t take too long and don’t think too much.
1. Line ‘Em Up EP - States
One summer, my friend Ginger shared this indie band’s EP to me and I couldn’t stop listening to their entire album. Up to this day I still know all the songs by heart. Literally brings me back to my teenage years! This blog post’s title is off one of their songs called “Asleep.” Listen here.
2. Albertine - Brooke Fraser
I looked up to Brooke Fraser a lot, and still do. Her music aesthetic, total package, and how she writes songs are unimaginable. Not to mention, she’s a Christian too, which made my admiration for her even greater.
I think I was about 14 or 15 when JoJo’s self-titled album was released. JoJo was about the same age, so it was pretty cool to relate to an artist in that way. My best friends and I would always blast it up on the CD player every time we hung out. And daaaaang, who wasn’t impressed with her mad vocal skills? Major talent, I tell ya.
4. Ocean Avenue - Yellowcard
LOL. There’s a story behind this, which I’m too lazy to talk about. Or even if I wasn’t lazy, I’d probably still not confess, esp on public. On to the next!
5. Room For Squares - John Mayer
Because who wouldn’t be moved by John Mayer?
I legit had a phase of finding brokenness even more beautiful than anything. I guess there’s good to that. Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’ depicted it during my teenage years, and I totally went hands down when Birdy made a cover of it. I also did a cover, of the cover! Haha. *mind blown* Listen to it here.
7. Good Girl Gone Bad - Rihanna
I don’t think there was any Rihanna song that didn’t go to the charts. This album had the most songs I played over and over.
8. Just Say Yes - The Narrative
I was really so much in to indie artists as a teenager!!! I think I said it thrice already in this post alone. I listened to a lot of mainstream things too, but then again that’s the thing: every one was listening to a particular song, and every radio/establishment/person you meet is singing it! I didn’t like that feeling so I was always on the look for EPs. This particular one had only 6 songs.
9. Rebirth - Jennifer Lopez
She my OG homegirl. I loved J.Lo since her ‘On The 6′ album. I remember owning it on cassette tape. Haha. Also, I adored her style and FACE forever.
10. Kami nAPO Muna - Various Artists
Once upon a time, I was part of a band. Hashtag true story! I was one of the lead vocals in an almost all-boy band (yup I was the only girl). OPM was really happening back in high school. Everyone almost listened to local artists more than international ones, which was a v good thing.
Filipinos are known worldwide to being good singers (duh, lol) and I do hope our support for OPM artists will be ‘til the end of tiiiiiiime.
Aaaaand that concludes this post. Lemme know your thoughts? Do send me your list on my Ask Me Anything link. If you wanna just holla, feel free to do so too homie.
