*by "pre-screening", i typically mean any sort of behavior that exists on a spectrum of "actually watching/playing/reading the thing before you played it" to "doing any sort of research on it before letting you watch it".

admittedly, i am a little obsessed with like 65% of the tags on this post so far basically saying "my parents didn't pre-screen things but they [describes behavior that DEFINITELY qualifies as pre-screening]". i kinda hope maybe this post and others like it wake some people up to the fact that yes, even YOUR parents were controlling what perspectives and ideas you were and were not being allowed to access.
As far as I know, my parents didn't actually pre-screen media in any way that would actually hold up to peer review. They just went off what other parents, community gossip, talk show scaremongering, and occasionally hysterical news reports had to say about various shows, and never actually watched the stuff themselves with an eye to what it looks like to kids or what they might have to explain.
Which is why my brother and I were allowed to watch Star Wars and Ghostbusters and the nightly news reports of the Gulf War, but not... -checks notes- ...Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (Also my mom got REAL mad at the babysitter for showing us Legend because of the cover art, until the girl told her it was good Christian education because the devil-coded character loses in the end.)
We weren't allowed to listen to contemporary music either (it was "obscene"), so there's like a ten-year period of classic pop and and hiphop that I know NOTHING about, but I know an awful lot of 1960s-1970s soft rock hits.

Hella curious because I live in an urban area and the largest wild (debatable) mammals I've seen are rats (so sad), and it blows my mind that there are whole ass truck size moose walking around people's streets

the problem with watching buffy the vampire slayer for the first time when you're 13 is that it will fundamentally reshape your brain chemistry to the point where literally all fiction becomes buffy the vampire slayer in different fonts. "watch another show!" you might say, and believe me i have! i promise i've watched many other shows since i was 13. but the problem is that all those other shows as well as films, books, podcasts etc. are simply deviations of buffy the vampire slayer to me. it's the holy text, the primary source. everything else is just commentary.

I had a dream last night that Neko Atsume added a new food item called “Shitty Bitz” and buying it gave you fish instead of the other way ‘round but it put it out as soon as you bought it and you couldn’t replace it and it took forever to get emptied out (the only way to get rid of it) because it would only attract two cats and their names were Hobo and Glunkus but also that was the only way to get those two cats to show up. Hobo looked like a kinda dirty brown cat and Glunkus looked like the devil like he was black and his entire face was teeth. I woke up crying
