On Thursday, December 1st at 7:00 p.m., watch a free preview of the film Troop 1500 at the Missouri History Museum.  This screening is part of the Nine Network Community Cinema Series which features panel discussions along with the movie.

Troop 1500 follows five young Girl Scouts — sisters Caitlin and Mikaela, Jasmine, Jessica, and Naomi — whose mothers are serving time. Once inside the prison, the girls of Troop 1500 fall into the arms of the mothers they seldom see — Kenya, Melissa, Ida, and Susan — crying and laughing while pulling out report cards and pictures and passing along hellos from grandparents and absent brothers.

Ameren Thanksgiving Day Parade

Ameren Thanksgiving Day Parade is known as one of the best parades in the country.  The parade features dozens of floats and balloons in addition to marching bands from across the area.

The Harlem Globetrotters are named as Honorary Grand Marshals for this year's event. 

The parade starts at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 24th at the corner of Washington and 4th and proceeds South on 4th Street to Market and then heads West on Market Street and concludes on 14th Street in downtown Saint Louis.  For more information, take a look at the parade web site.

2011 Spring Art Fair At Queeny Park

Labor Day weekend brings art and the beginning of Fall as the Greater St. Louis Art Association holds its 36th Fall Art Fair at Queeny Park.

The fair features more than 130 juried artists from 20 states. The fair runs on Friday Sep. 2 from 6 pm to 9 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm.

If you have kids, make sure to bring them on Sunday as the fair will be featuring special activities for kids from 12:00 pm to 4 pm.  For more info visit the web site.

LouFest in Forest Park

August 27th and 28th features two days of indie bands in Forest Park.  This all ages festival features 18 bands on 2 stages.  There's even a kids zone called Area K where families can participate in fun activities, and this area features its own separate stage.

What's most appreciated is the festival's green initiative.  There will be bike valet parking available in addition to water refill stations.

Bands performing at the festival include: The Roots, TV On The Radio, Cat Power, Deerhunter, !!!, The Hold Steady, Surfer Blood, Dom, Das Racist, The Low Anthem, Kings Go Forth, Lost in the Trees, Ume, Sleepy Sun, Troubadour Dali, Jumbling Towers, Old Lights, and John Hardy & The Public.

It's BluesWeek

Saint Louis BluesWeek Festival music starts tonight on Washington Avenue at 6th Street at 6:00 p.m.  Country Road Blues is scheduled first featuring Tom Hall and Boss Hall.  Uptown Blues featuring Stacy Mitchhart Band with Renee Smith and Skeet Rodgers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.; River City Blues featuring Mike Zito Band with Marquise Knox at 8:30; and the night ends with Deep Blues featuring Big George Brock at 10.

On Saturday, August 27th, the festival begins at 2:00 p.m., featuring some of the biggest names in jazz and blues and continues into the night.  Last year's festival had over 10,000 in attendance, and this year the festival is expecting over 20,000. 

On Sunday the 28th, the festival features an All Star Brunch at The Great Grizzly Bear from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a $5 cover and $7 buffet.  Reservations are recommended as it tends to sell out early.  Reservations can be made by e-mail at [email protected].

The 29th features a Blues Panel History discussion of the "Great Women of Blues."  This discussion will be held at 7 p.m. at the Missouri History Museum.  A blues workshop will be held featuring harp on August 31 and guitar on September 1. 

On September 2nd and 3rd, you can enjoy the "Soulard Blues Cruise" where you can walk down the streets of Soulard and listen to several blues bands in ten different venues. For ten dollars, you will be given a wristband that will allow you to attend the different venues.

BluesWeek closes on September 4th with the 2nd Annual St. Louis BluesWeek Awards which will be held at the Blueberry Hill Duck Room where Chuck Berry will receive a lifetime achievement award.

BBC: A Rembrandt drawing valued at $250,000 has been taken from a hotel in California in a “well thought-out, well-executed theft”, police said.

The piece, called The Judgement, was taken from an exhibition at the Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey.

Da Vinci Machines Exhibition

St. Louis is currently hosting for a limited engagement the Da Vinci Machines Exhibition at the Bank of America building located at 800 Market Street, Saint Louis, Missouri.  The exhibition features over 60 interactive and working machines created per Da Vinci's drawings and sketches.  These machines include many of Da Vinci's flight, war, and hydraulic machines.  This exhibition is on loan from the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy.

Visitors can take a tour or participate in the interactive exhibits available throughout the exhibition.  They can also view a 45 minute movie about Da Vinci's life and career.

The tickets are $14.00 for general admission.  The web site offers a discount price of $10 per ticket until August 11.  At this time, the exhibition is set to run through the end of September.

Moonlight Ramble August 13-14

Tickets are now on sale for Moonlight Ramble, the largest nighttime bicycle ride in the world.  This event draws over 10,000 cyclists of all experiences and capabilities.  Registration and pre-ride events start at 9:00 p.m. at Soldiers' Memorial.  The 15 mile circuit ride will officially begin at 12:01 a.m. and end at Soldiers Memorial with an after party.  Helmets are required.  Bike locks are recommended in order to lock up your bike during the after party.  For more information go to the Moonlight Ramble Web Site. Free Mr. Steve Concert

Today, the Nine Network is hosting a free Mr. Steve Concert at the Saint Louis County Library Headquarters located at 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. in Saint Louis.  The show begins at 7:00 p.m. and features Mr. Steve and many of his favorite songs.

Little Mermaid at The Muny

Tonight, The Muny debuts Disney's Broadway Musical The Little Mermaid.  The Little Mermaid is based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen.  However, in this story, the mermaid Ariel has fun sidekicks such as Sebastian the crab and Scuttle the seagull. 

Ariel is a mermaid princess with a beautiful voice who longs to walk on land.  She makes a deal with Ursula the sea witch wherein she temporarily trades her voice to become human and walk on land.  Ursula has her own evil plans in which she hopes to negatively change Ariel's life and world forever.

This show stars Patti Murin as Ariel.  Ms. Murin starred on Broadway in Xanadu where she received excellent reviews.  Her appearance tonight should promise to be an enjoyable one.  Paul Vogt will be playing the role of Ursula which is a spectacular casting.  Vogt's performance as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray was spectacular.  The only concern with Vogt's performance is that such a strong singer and actor could have the potential to overshadow the rest of the cast.

The Little Mermaid is set to run from July 6 to July 14th.  Tonight's showtime is at 8:15 p.m.  For more information, go to:  www.muny.org.

Centro-matic at Off Broadway

Indie-rock band Centro-matic will be playing tonight at Off-Broadway with Sarah Jaffe opening. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and the show is scheduled for 9:00 p.m.  

This tour, the first in quite some time, is to promote their new album Candidate Waltz.  This band has a prolific fifteen year recording and performing history.  This newest album was written by lead singer Will Johnson solely on bass guitar.  These new songs carry a strong lyrical and rhythmic balance which clearly shows Johnson's musical experience.  While this band has a strong cult following, their talents and albums are sorely under-appreciated by the general public.

Tickets for tonight's show are $8 for those over 21 and $11 for under 21.
