Dear Mainstream Media
Dear Reporters, Contributors and Editors of “the mainstream media”,
Tuesday night on my way to a friend’s house to watch the election return. I thought about writing a letter address to you. I remember saying to myself that whoever wins this election, it would not fundamentally change the core message of my letter. I don’t even have a right to choose during this whole process. I’m a Chinese who’s currently holding a H1-B Visa and working in the U.S. I’m what some people would call an outsider. But as someone who has the honor to claim herself a communicator, I can’t withhold what I’ve seen and experienced during this election. As a human being, I can’t withhold the words.
Never in my life did I ever imagine that I’d care about politics, let alone American politics. Yet, I was forced to learn more than I’ve ever wanted along the way. As a person with Chinese background who have lived in the states for 8 years, I surround myself with both U.S. social media and Chinese social media. From both sides I learned that, when Americans are showing the highest enthusiasm towards this election, there also comes Chinese, who would not want to be left behind in this trend. I’m not just referring to Chinese Americans, but pointing at the entire Chinese speaking community, including visitors, temporary residents, permanent residents and citizens, and even further, those who have never stepped their foot in this country. I talk to you about this large group because their opinions affect each other, affect this election.
People from the Chinese speaking community may not all be paying attention to the U.S. mainstream media, to your works, but thanks to the modern technology and the rise of social media, they’ve all been sharing and discussing information, articles and opinions about this election, crafted by “their own people”. These writers claim themselves as “self-media”. They use Chinese language social media very efficiently to share information, thoughts and opinions. These self-media are super popular not just in China but also among Chinese speaking communities here in the States. Restaurants and retail businesses who can get these self-media to write about them in their articles often experience a huge increasing in Chinese consumers. You know how it works. Self-media platforms (like “WeChat Public Accounts”, which is the most successful one among all) have become a booming business.
It was a large amount of this same group of new media, producing articles about this election, full of fake information, conspiracy, but no fact base at all. Some of those articles, to show that they are quoting reliable sources, would put up an English news article or one not-completed sentence and translate them into something totally different, or intentionally misinterpret the actual meaning of the quoted source. According to them, all mainstream media are on Hillary Clinton’s side, therefore attacking Trump, portraying him as the devil have always been on their agenda. According to them, most Chinese people here (with or without the right to vote) favor Trump.
When the “reopening of Clinton’s email case” news broke, some of them quoted one headline of a NYT’s opinion piece -- “How Hillary Clinton Met Satan” -- saying it’s a proof of NYT (together with the mainstream media) abandoning Clinton. They use this again then, to prove that “you all are not trustworthy”. That is, of course, one of many examples that I want to share with you.
So many times that I thought about blocking those accounts, but I didn’t. Because that’ll just make me one of them. Because in order to be not too biased, I’ll need to know what they are talking about.
I’m not here to tell you that “people only choose to see what they want to see”, because we’ve seen enough proof of that. I am here to say though, that there are a large amount of Chinese Americans who still rely on Chinese language media (including traditional, but most new media) to receive information. Unfortunately among those Chinese language media, exist lots of fact-free ones, and they won’t stop telling Chinese Americans that “you are all lying”. Those who believed these information simply because they don’t read English, did end up voting for Trump.
That night when walking down the street of Central Park South, I know that deep down in my heart, I was hoping for one result over the other one. I hoped that Hillary could win a very tight election, so tight that it would be a winning by 1 point. Then it’d be scary enough to force us to reflect on ourselves. Then we’d spend less time crying or cursing at the others, but questioning ourselves, asking how did it come this close for us to lose. If that was the case, I believe people would feel at least just a little bit more optimistic. There would be a lot of voices saying “okay, now we’ve past the scariest moment, but let’s not forget the hidden risk, let’s figure out what’s causing this scary situation, and let’s fix it.” Those voices would sound more confident too. Of course, all those “if” now don’t exist.
But as I said in the beginning of my letter, the results don’t really change what I want to let you know. Because Chinese Americans are a large group of people and this group is growing rapidly. Their votes do count, they do matter. I certainly hope that there would be an accurate poll to analyze Chinese voters, followed by a plan to really reach out to them.
…you don’t have to wait for someone to treat you bad repeatedly. All it takes is once, and if they get away with it that once, if they know they can treat you like that, then it sets the pattern for the future.

Dublin, I miss you
I keep thinking about that day, that first day when I was walking down the street in Dublin, that feeling of a dream come true, well, part of a dream come true.
I could never explain my exact feeling at that moment, but I know I would never forget about it. Friend said she felt so proud of me when knowing that I finally made it there. I wish that I was not there all alone by myself, but then I feel I should really look at the bright side.
I wonder when would be the next time, that I get to walk down the same street again. Even if, still by myself, I would very much like to do so.
So what if nobody came? I’ll have all the ice cream and tea, And I’ll laugh with myself, And I’ll dance with myself, And I’ll sing, “Happy Birthday to me!

Was just talking about going back the other day..... I was sitting right there a year ago. @_@
oh man... this makes me really want an ice cream now, like, now, right now, at this moment! Gotta refill my fridge again!
This Summer... Get Certified as an Open Water Scuba Diver!
If you are getting tired of movies, eating out, shopping, road trips, scuba diving is something that never gets old! Each and every moment you experience under the sea, is an once in a life time scene.
I never try to talk someone in to scuba diving, I just present them the facts, whether or not to fall in love with it, or at least give it a try, totally personal thing.
70% of this planet is covered by water. Oceans are the last unexplored frontier, which means, you will never get enough of it.
I once loved to leave my current living city and just go very far away for vacation. I loved the concept of “escaping”, wishing to really relax and forget about my daily routine. I mean, I still love travelling, but no matter where you go, there are still people that you need to deal with, there are still noise that you need to bear. But the minute when you go under water, when you plunge beneath the waves, the only thing you are going to hear is your breathing. The outside world will feel far away for real this time, plus no talking at all, obviously. Everything, inside of you, outside you , feels more clear.
Things seem to go slow under water, the feeling of weight disappearing makes you think that way. You get to practice “real” moon walking. In fact, anything you do under the water, there’s no one to look or judge.
Obviously lobster, hogfish and all those expensive seafood are just couple steps away now given that you are under the ocean. It’s probably a real all you can eat (or more of all you are able to catch) case here. Sorry, it seems to ruin the beautiful moment here a little bit, but I just have to mention the FOOD BENEFIT, it’s important to me.
Alright, back to the high class feeling part. All the creatures in that world, they are so much cooler when they are seen outside of the zoo. Turtles, dolphins, rays, all those different color and weird shape fishes (ugly or beautiful, they are all cute in some way)...... The possibilities are just endless. Oh, and touching is allowed.
There people who think antique stuff and historical buildings are so cool. Well, things you touch under the sea often has a high possibility to be there for millions of years already, how cool does that sound now?
Thinking about all the stories you could tell your friends. A dance with a turtle (you know they can live like really really really long right? they’ll probably meet your great great great grand kid some day), a spiritual conversation with a shark.
No matter how ordinary your world, or the entire world is out there. Down here at this moment, you are witnessing something that billions of people before never imagined was part of our planet.
What is Going to Happen is Going to Happen
Was browsing all the pictures that I’ve been taken since came to the states. Sometimes days feel painfully long, but it has only been almost 6 years. I know, 6 years is not a shot time, but sometimes I feel it should actually be longer than that.
Then I saw a lot of faces of those who are either not here with me anymore or we sort of just lost contact, some for bad reasons, others, well not so bad ones. The point is, those who are away now are much more than those who are still around. I wonder if it’s because of this city, people come and go and walk away (yes, just like the lyric says).
The year of 2015, two of my very good friends move to CA, another one went back to China for good, and there is another one who’s going back to Taiwan for good. We haven’t even reached to half of the year yet. All of them, we hang out almost every week, sometimes every other day. Then the other night, the night before this girl’s flight back to China, we went out shopping and eat and take subway home together just like any other regular day. We didn’t have any of those farewell kind of conversation, like I said, just like any other days before. Deep inside though, I couldn’t stop thinking, I could probably estimate the number of times that we are going to see each other for the rest of our lives. Then I started to think, whether we’ve all got our quota, and we probably used it too fast before, so now, we don’t have that much left and we are further from each other because of that.
People change, all the time, and that’s probably the only thing that doesn’t change. People says true friendship doesn’t change because of time or distance or whatever other stuff might be. I say of course those things change it, doesn’t mean your friendship at that old times were true. It’s just that, everything changes, and when things are different, people see things differently, think differently. Good memories remain, but they only remain in somewhere you could not go. And the rest of you, the current you, only moves forward not along with them by your side.
Meerikat vs. Periscope War: My App Review
So we have all heard of the war between Periscope and Meerkat, which would imply that both parties would equally have a shot at competing. So I guess that means there really isn’t a war going on because hands-down, Periscope wins! Right? Well, I guess you decide, but in the meantime here is my little review on both the apps. Hope this helps…..enjoy!

Festival Essentials
Summer is right around the corner, for those of us on the East Coast, this means beaches, bbqs, and music festivals. Whether your headed to Governor’s Ball, Firefly, or if Taste of Country is more your thing these few essentials will get you through your weekend.
Since, I don’t know anyone who likes being gross and smelly (especially in the scorching summer sun) let’s keep these items handy.
First, all natural makeup wipes. They are not only good for removing your makeup but helping to keep your pores clear and fresh faced. There’s always lots of dirt flying around and you don’t want to let it all soak into your skin. If you’re camping these are great since water is typically in high demand.
Next, sunscreen! I’ve said it before but it is so important to keep on you. Grab a spray or application stick. A spray/stick keeps it easy to reapply, and harsh sunburn could make for a long and uncomfortable weekend.
Deodorant. Self-explanatory, but don’t forget to bring into festival.
Finally. A backpack is the best way to keep everything you need on you.
Coppertone Water Babies sunscreen spray is pretty good......
