paternity rights are property rights & oppressive to women
if a woman has already willing agreed to allow a man to impregnate her (and if not, it would be rape), it can be presumed that this woman was planning on having a child with this man, right?
after all, if she was raped, then it would be totally justified in the eyes of most liberal and many conservative people for the woman to decide to never see this man again. (this argument seems familiar… hmmm… where else do people argue that women are allowed boundaries to our bodies only after being raped?)
so, she willingly gets pregnant with this guy. so clearly, this means this was something that they planned to do together. what could possibly make her want to suddenly leave him and continue the pregnancy on her own, when it is such a hardship to be a single mother?
some might argue that the woman is most likely randomly crazy, as if she has no past or background, as if she did not already willingly agree to get pregnant with this man, so presumably, she wanted him in her life. as if it’s just like a thing for women to spontaneously go crazy.
and then, something happens, and she doesn’t want that man in her life anymore. now, why do we assume that the only reason a woman wouldn’t want a man in her life anymore is a sudden random decision to be crazy or malicious and act without reason at all? probably because if we assumed that women were reasonable people, we would have to conclude that a reasonable person wouldn’t just leave someone they planned to have a baby with unless they had a good cause to do so–and good reasons to leave somebody would have to mean that the person you want to leave did something bad.
the bottom line is that people are extremely reluctant to believe that it is possible for men to do bad things to women, so much so that people would rather believe that women are over emotional and randomly go crazy and do things for no reason.
on the other hand, men have reasons to do these bad things to women–to maintain control of the family structure, to use us as reproductive and domestic resources. these are material benefits men get from controlling women. when men are accused of violence, the reasoning behind their violence can be explained, and it is not random.
so when a woman wants to get away from a man she has had a baby with, she probably has a very good fucking reason for doing so. good people don’t try to use the law to maintain control over the life of someone who is trying to escape them. good people don’t need to be escaped from in the first place.
abusers are not the people who are running away, abusers are the people who are doing the chasing, and trying to keep their victims in their grasp.
