Little announcement, all! Nevermore will be going on a short summer break. Flynn and I have made the controversial decision to go outside and see the sun. But never fear, I'll burn immediately, remember why I don't go out there, and then we'll be set 'til next summer! Was anyone going to tell me that Woody in all of my favorite Toy Story adjacent video games has been voiced by JIM Hanks, or was I supposed to find that out from the cast listing for Disney Speedstorm?
It's really funny that MI2 predicted Guybrush as obnoxiously stuck in the past, clinging to iconic moments and places that made him famous until everyone got bored with him completely, only for the franchise to become exactly that after Tales. We got the beautifully and artfully made Sea of Thieves DLC, which really does capture the FEEL of the original SoMI but in 3D, but there's nothing original about it, it's literally made TO be a retread, even narratively. Then Return came, and while we have a lot more original content, characters, and places, the entire story still REVOLVES around LeChuck and the Secret. Playing it with my brother was frustrating because while we both grew up with MI3 and MI4 (and the first half of Tales), he only got to briefly play the other games Return puts a LOT of faith in the idea that you will recognize places and events that shouldn't necessarily define Guybrush as a character. This fandom has been full of mi1+mi2 elitists for forever but now it feels like they've snuck into the dev team, too.
I loved Return to Monkey Island, and the Legend of Monkey Island in Sea of Thieves is what finally convinced me to cave and get into that game. However, I completely agree with the trend you've noticed. This is why Curse of Monkey Island will always be my favorite game. It managed to draw from all of the wonderful development that came before, but also added so many key aspects of the Monkey Island world. I feel that Murray is the greatest example of this.
Still, I think there is hope for the future still. I was playing the Monkey Island shanty in Sea of Thieves when some young pirates ran into me. They seemed curious to learn the song and set off to complete the Tall Tales. Little by little, we may just be able to trick more people into loving this series of games again.

I don't ever post things on here because my normal life is far too busy (*cough* and I'm super depressed *cough*). However, I've been thinking about how I finally came out to myself as asexual a few years ago, and how I have been working through questioning my romantic and gender identity. Although it has been confusing and scary actually thinking about myself, I have never been so relieved to put a word to the differences I have been sensing for years.
It feels weird to say, but I owe it all to reading about one member of the Kart Kingdom wiki of all things describing herself as an aromantic asexual in her bio. I never knew her personally, and I just looked up to her and her contributions to that wiki. However, that was my first inspiration to think harder about myself. I know that she has long since moved on from that (sadly) dead game, but having read this genuinely changed my life.

Just thinking about how different Season 3 Kieran is from Season 1 Kieran tonight.
Season 1 Kieran would have never shared cake with Lauren or looked that relaxed around her. He saw her as a means to an end, primarily. He saw her lie detecting ability and her detective skills and how useful she is, not much else.
He is also far more tense in Season 1. Less free. Less at peace.
It starts to change, right before the Tower Incident. Kieran and Lauren have a brief moment of vulnerability, but they’re still pretty standoffish. Kieran is less settled because he still cannot see a way out of being an assassin, even though they did a lot of work against the Phantom Scythe.
In Season 3, though, he is more genuine, more open, and he has hope. He has hope that his assassin days are at their end. He had hope that he might be free from the Phantom Scythe. And he has someone to be genuine with, someone who will help him and someone he can be more free with.
Through Season 2, Kieran came to see Lauren as more than what she could do for him and his mission. He came to see her as a person worth protecting, a person worth knowing, a person with whom Kieran could let down his guard with, even if it’s only slightly.
That change is so evident in that scene in episode 148.
In the memory, Kieran has his devil may care mask on, smirking and enjoying the scene in front of him, but not at peace, with no hope, and with no connection. He was only an observer. In the present time, he has connection, he has hope, he is working towards freedom and peace.
He has something to live for.
