Got a personal from Shimmer. My flash piece didn't do enough with itself to overcome the fact that flash itself is a hard sell for them. I feel like I should be more bummed for some reason, but I'm sorta like "it is what it is." On to the next market, which may be a better fit (I do research, of course, but I'm still new to this). And this weekend I will finish something longer, hopefully.
This story almost made me late for work. I’ve been prepping for a possible flash submission to Shimmer by checking out what they publish, and decided to read the first line or two of this in bed this morning. Couldn’t put it down.
I love the way the story feels simultaneously so familiar (especially to a girl who grew up in a big city) and so obviously distinct from our reality. Plus I could eat the words, they’re so good. Something to aspire to, for sure.
Okay, so in reality I have been writing in one form or another for as long as I can remember, but it was one year ago today that I took my first Gotham Writers’ Workshop class in speculative fiction and immediately found a group of like-minded writers and an instructor (Paul Witcover!) who made me feel like I could really be a speculative fiction writer.
This year is the year I make it happen. Doing Write 1, Sub 1 (write a story every month and submit a story every month, in my case) to help push me on my way. Exploring the speculative fiction world to learn more about what I’m getting into - going to cons, reading more publications, etc. And documenting it all here (submissions, rejections, events, thoughts, whathaveyou). I’m in it to win it, y’all. Whatever that means.
