i think the core four ends their romantic relationships. nix and benny love each other. once, they might've married. the nix before charlie pink eye killed her mother, dragged her across the ruin for the first time. that nix loved benny. might've been his soulmate. lilah and chong just grow apart. i think they'd keep a physical relationship, the two never falling in love with anyone else. they'd be married in the ways that count. but they'd never admit it. lilah from her trauma with annie and chong because he's always on death's door. he doesn't want to put her through that. still, he can't find himself staying away.

years down the road, i think gutsy and benny fall in love. benny and gutsy both lost their only parental figure. i think it would be a one night stand, gutsy getting pregnant. benny goes through phases of wanting to name their child morgan, riot, or tom.

I SAW THIS AND I JUST HAD TO SAY THAT there's actually a couple more books within the rot and ruin series (dead of night, fall of night, still of night, and dark of night) and there's also broken lands and lost roads. for some reason jonathan maberry doesn't market it at all as being in the same series even though there's multiple character overlap.

whenever broken lands was released, it was marketed as another book in the rot and ruin series and i noticed sometime after broken lands and lost roads became their own series so idk!! @massiveladycat

YES!!! i will say that dead of night is marketed towards adults and i think the way he talks about the main character dez is kinda cringe and the last two books are just not the best quality. but i think it's super fun lore for the rot and ruin universe!

Lilah leaves Mountainside in the dead of night. She doesn't like it there. The people are too friendly, too much. Sometimes, she can't distinguish threats from compliments, and can't help but feel that the meaningless questions they ask her are because they want to hurt her.

That's what happened to George. The reason she lost him and Annie. She wanted to leave a note for Benny or Nix, to let them know she was safe. It doesn't happen. She tries to remind herself that she doesn't care about them. In her gut, deep and violent, she wants to turn back.

She doesn't get very far, just into the tree lining, when a twig snaps behind her. Lilah, on instinct, has her knife out, practically throwing herself at the man behind her, pinning him down with the blade against his throat, and straddling his waist. "You're leaving?" He asked, his voice sounding far too hurt. It's Chong. He must've seen her. He didn't beg for his life like the others she killed had, and didn't even try to fight it. There was no fear in his eyes, only accusation.

Lilah can't remember the time that anyone had spoken to her in that way since she lost Annie. With affection. With love.

She buried the feeling deep down, where she'd never be able to reach. Love didn't help you survive in the Ruin. In the Ruin, love was a weakness. George would be alive if he didn't love her and her sister like they were his own.

Lilah stands far too quickly for it to be natural. "Go home, Chong. You'll die out here,"

"Did something happen?" He says, standing, and brushing leaves and dirt off his pants. "I can help it,"

"You can't," Lilah snapped. Her chest burned with years of hatred, anger, and fear coming up. Her eyes threatened to water. "You can't help me,"

"I'll tell Tom," Chong threatened. As if that did anything. Since he rejected her, he's been avoiding her. "I'll be gone by then,"

"Then I'm coming with you," He says.

This time, Lilah doesn't argue.
