I grew up in Hampshire, UK and now I live in London. I study Anthropology, which doesn't define who I am but it does seem to define the way I see the world and people. Visual anthropology is something I'm really interested in.
I've taken photographs since I was a child. Haven't most people? Maybe I've taken it for granted...
My parents gave my first camera to me as a birthday present; I think I was about six-years-old. I guess I took photographs then because it was fun. And now, it's still for fun but it comes with a compulsion.
I don't know if it resonates to other people but I always feel like I live a kind of double life through photography. The way I express myself in the city seems really different to the way I do in the place I grew up.
I feel obligated to document whatever's going on with me and the people I surround myself with, and the places I visit. It sounds standard but it's hard to explain. For me, photography is the best way to express how I look at stuff and how I feel about what's in front of me. It's more seductive than keeping a written diary. Through photographs, I can show people parts of my life as I go along but fundamentally; it's more personal and a memorial thing. To look back into the past and feel something I might no longer feel about a particular place or person. I guess that's the simplest answer.
↑↑↑I took these when I had an international student friend come to stay with me at my parent's house in Hampshire. She's from Latvia and had only really seen London since she moved to the UK. She was so fascinated by the trees and wild animals in the countryside because it reminded her of home. It was raining and we went on a long walk in the woods and to the river and the church around the village I grew up in. It's a great memory because I got to explore places I had been to one hundred times before, with this new perspective. The perspective of my friend.
