“Aww, you’ve missed me? You’re going soft, Noah,” Meg jokingly teased, unable to help herself. More seriously, she added, “Really, though, it’s nice to have someone on your side. Especially when things are so crazy. I’m sure we’ll come up with a good plan– after all, it hasn’t been so long since we ourselves were human. We’re like the in-between.”

“Of course I’ve missed you. Things just really weren’t the same without my socially aware friend.” Noah elbowed her slightly with a grin. “That’s a good way to keep it, I think, since we could be considered the middle neutral ground.”

“Or wondering if there’s a reason you of all people are still around,” Meg added with a sympathetic smile. She knew that Noah probably understood her position more than most, as two of the newest supernaturals in town. “I know. It can sometimes be kinda overwhelming,” she admitted.

“Yeah, exactly.” Noah could relate entirely. Knowing that if he hadn’t been emerged into the supernatural world before all of this shit blew up, he didn’t know what side he’d be on. “We have each other though. That’s something I’ve missed when you were gone. And...we just need to come up with some solid kick ass plan.”

“I know.” Kevin said with a smirk. He hadn’t realized how much he missed conversations like this. Just playful banter with nothing serious about them. There were too many serious conversations lately, with everyone it seemed. “Oh, come on. That shit gets intense so if you really needed it, nothing would stop your appetite.” His head shook. Kevin had no way of wrapping his head around it completely, but it had some similarities to when he couldn’t control his anger. “It’d be easier if I even knew half of them. You need to make more vampire friends so you have peeps when I’m dead.”

“You’re right. If things ever got that bad, I guess I would just ravage through anything and everything for some blood.” Noah wasn’t sure he ever wanted to see himself get that low, but with how things were turning out, he felt like it wasn’t too far off. “Maybe you should hang out at the house or something? Isn’t there a pack house? And yeah, I need to do a lot of things before all the people around me die, but I’ll just leave that for later, until it’s too late.”

“Not at all. Aren’t parents supposed to embarrass their kids anyways? I’m just making up for lost time. Plus, she hasn’t been able to do it so I’m filling in for the both of us.” Kevin could get used to this kind of joking. The two had before, especially in the last year, but never about this stuff. Seeing the look on his face made it all worth it. “Because she might be old, but nothing about her is old.” He joked again, taking more of his drink. “You can pretty much do whatever you want with no consequences. With not keeping it in your pants at least. Oh god, don’t remind me. Most of my friends are going to look good forever and I’m going to turn into a grumpy old man.”

“God, you’re the worst.” Noah rolled his eyes at the other young man, unable to keep a straight face. It was nice to just be able to joke around like this too, especially when things always were so much more serious around everybody else. “Well, that just made me lose my appetite for the rest of my evening, so thanks for that.” He liked this relationship he had with Kevin, and was happy that at least someone could be there for him. “Well, you’ve got the pack that’ll age with you, so you’ll be fine.”

“Well, I can’t deny that. But I’m tired of just surviving,” Meg shrugged. “At least I’m not the only one wondering how things got so crazy– I mean, a year ago I was dying of cancer and hardly able to keep myself alive, and now I’m Kyle’s second and expected to keep the whole pack in order when he isn’t around. It’s crazy.”

“Yeah. Surviving’s no fun when you’re literally going every day wondering if it’ll be your last.” He sighed then, trying to regain some composure. “Things just....seemed to have changed overnight. Or at least, that’s how it has felt.”

“Great, I’ve become the defenseless human in this scenario.” Never once had Kevin thought his life would relate to Twilight. Nothing about it was even factual, yet here it was being brought up. He drank another good portion of his drink, starting to relax. The most fun part of the night had come practically at the end of the whole party. Almost everyone had left, but it was nice to enjoy the quieting space. “No need. I just make her do that instead.” Kevin let out a loud laugh, the alcohol slowly setting in. “I know how to keep it in my pants, okay? I don’t need to sleep with everyone.” The playfulness of it all was helping Kevin to forget about all of the bad things that had happened that night. “We are civilized adults. By then everything will be good whether we’re on speaking terms or not.”

“It’s a win-win scenario if you ask me.” Noah said politely, winking knowingly at the other. his smirk growing wider. “You’re disgusting, you know that?” Noah’s face scrunched at the daddy part, praying that he was joking, and seeing how the rest of the conversation had turned out, he thought it was safe to assume as much. “Like...I literally only think of her as this old woman. How you don’t never fails to amaze me.” He leaned back into his chair once more, letting the mood of the end of the night surround him. “Look, all I have to say to that is when you live forever, what’s the point of keeping it all in your pants? And true. By then, you’ll probably be an old man yourself anyways.”

“Do you not see the dilemma I’m having right now? They literally met each other like…an hour ago. There’s no double action if they know about each other.” He laughed at the situation. Five minutes ago he was upset about it, now he was making jokes. “Oh, I’ll just fill her in on all the teenage stuff. I’d like to think that I helped get you through that. You know if we get back together, I’ll be like you dad.” Kevin clapped Noah on the back. “I hope I’m around to see it. I want to be invited to the wedding.” 

“Well, I mean, you just gotta appease to both sides, right? Oh man, you’re just like Bella from Twilight now!” Noah was chuckling along with Kevin, the situation becoming less tense as the more time passed on. Thankfully, they were able laugh about it, so things were easier to get through. Before he had a chance to say anything else, he scoffed and rolled his eyes, making a face and shrugging Kevin’s hand off of him. “God, don’t remind me. Should I just start calling you daddy now, or were you thinking of just hooking up with the other one instead.” Noah punched Kevin’s shoulder at that point. “Well, it’ll just depend on how good of terms you’re on with Ant by then. Don’t need any awkward reunions, you know.”

“Hey, you know I wouldn’t exclude you on purpose. And of course, whatever the plan is, we’ll be in it together.”

“Wow, thanks for helping. No, we didn’t. Nothing happened. Literally just talked the entire time.” Whether it sounded true or not, there was nothing more to tell. “You haven’t pissed off your mom yet? What kind of son are you?” It was easy to make a joke about it, but it wasn’t something Kevin liked dealing with either. “How romantic. Just make sure she knows what she’s getting herself into. Forever is a really long time.”

“You’re getting like double the action, while some of us are over here working overtime and getting nothing.” Noah easily fell back into a joking manner before making a face. “We’re at the stage where we’re friends. She was never around when I was a little jackass teenager for her to get mad at me. Plus, I’m on her good side.” He smirked back. “Yeah, no kidding. I’ll find that someone somewhere. It’s just a matter of time. You said it yourself, forever is a really long time, and I have forever to find someone.”

Kevin chuckled lightly at the look. “She’d never seen the Pacific Ocean, I needed to get away. It was a last minute decision but it seemed like a good one at the time.” Not that he’d say it was the wrong one either. Kevin would do it all over again given the chance. “I just made it super awkward and now Antonia’s pissed at me, not that I completely blame her.” He nodded, “So just don’t be yourself then and you’ll be fine,” Kevin joked. “I think you’ll be good. And I highly doubt you’ll be forever alone. You’ll just have to keep finding new mortal girlfriends.”

“Yeah, I don’t know how other people see that, but that definitely sounds like a romantic weekend getaway. Did you guys...seal the deal there?” Noah commented as he looked to Kevin still, before taking another sip of his liquor. “Yikes. That doesn’t sound like fun. I don’t think I’ve ever really seen her pissed off before, so good luck in handling that.” He chuckled back at their woe is me conversation. “That’s the right idea. And, of course, mortality is such a nasty little thing. Maybe I’ll find the right girl one day and make her a vampire too.”

“Pretty easily, apparently. Kyle’s upset that I didn’t protect Kaden more, even though we both know that she doesn’t need too much of that. And Antonia just found out that I went to California to Brooklyn, where I had the marvelous idea of telling her in front of both of them.” Kevin shook his head, still trying to wrap his head around why he even considered that to be a good idea. “Really? That’s just asking for trouble right there.” Kevin playfully hit Noah’s shoulder. “Everyone’s out of your league.” He joked, taking another sip of his drink. “Hey, if she hasn’t pushed you away yet, then who am I to tell you to stop? That’s entirely up to her.”

“Yeah, she’s pretty capable of protecting herself, I’d say.” He paused and took a long hard look at him. “Trouble in paradise? Why did you go to California with Brooklyn?” He gave him a knowing look, his smirk growing a little bit. “I guess I can’t help it. And of course they are. I’ll just live forever alone. But, yeah. Cam is a good person and I like her, a lot. I can’t screw this up.”

“Yeah, I guess,” she shrugged. Too bad she wasn’t as good at keeping the people around her alive as she was at keeping herself so. “…Do you ever feel like you’ve gotten in way over your head with this whole supernatural thing?”

“As far as I can tell, you and I thrive on surviving.” He winked at her with a slim smirk. “I wake up everyday wondering how I managed to get here. It all seemed to just follow me and from there, I couldn’t stop it.”

“In the past month, I’ve manage to piss off Kyle and Antonia. So, not really sure how much more important than that I can get.” He chuckled, “I don’t blame her for wanting to protect you, but you can also do whatever you want. Well, I can see now that you don’t care. You’ve already moved on to Cameron. How’s that going for you? Any luck this time?”

“Both of them? How’s that even possible? They both were gone for like a year.” He shook his head before adding, “Poor you.” Thinning his lips, he leaned back into his seat, getting more comfortable. “That’s what I told her, and instead she called me a douchebag— but that might have been after I called her a bitch.” He sighed sheepishly. “And Cameron’s great. She’s funny, nice, sweet, and honestly, out of my league if you ask me. But, I’ll keep coming back as long as she’ll have me around.”

“What? Have you been hiding under a rock? I’m on at least three shit lists right now. That’s not hard to do sometimes, though. Is that really surprising? Kyle’s back, so did you really expect anything happen? I think you like to torture yourself. I’m convinced you just like going after people with boyfriends.”

“Clearly I have been. But...whatever, at least the most important people around here like you. And... I guess not. I was just talking about staying in the city, and how she’s entirely hypocritical because she doesn’t want me to stay in the city with all the shit going on. It’s not even about....that. Plus, I know how she feels about me. She’ll always choose Kyle. I don’t even care anymore. And, I think you might be right. Something about going after someone else’s girl, it probably gives me a rush.”

“I think I might have been the one letting people down tonight. What happened?”

“You? C’mon, you’re like...everybody’s favorite person. I pissed off Kaden, And it seems like we’re just not getting anywhere with anything. Plus...I think I was supposed to hang out with Cameron, but I don’t even know what’s happened with her.”
