People to Watch with Things to Learn
Right. I need to stroke my list fetish a bit (you poor bastards). So, here are some people I have followed on YouTube for at least a year, most of them for more than a year, and at least one (Hi Leigh!) for about four years. Click on the name and get their website. Click on the channel and get their YouTube channel. Some may have tumblr blogs, but I am only certain about one (Hi Eric!).
The Snap Chick - This is Leigh and she puts out mostly fun and informative vids on photography and technology. She has possibly the most positive attitude of any human being ever. This is her YouTube channel.
Alan Brock is a large format film guy from Tennessee. He does not have a lot of vids out, but his instructional and review vids are priceless. He’s done a lot of work in Zion National Park. This is his channel.
Ben Horne is another large format film guy. He does Zion and Death Valley every year as well as other locations out west. He’s based in California. If you want to see film work that will take your breath away, do to his page. His videos and journals are an interesting look at the how and why side of the art. Here is his YouTube channel.
Sean Tucker is a working photographer/videographer out of London. He puts out some quirky and positive videos that are encouraging and his portrait work is amazing. This here is his YouTube channel.
Thomas Heaton is also out of the UK and has some of the best made videos out there. They are beautiful and entertaining. He is a working digital photographer and his landscapes are the bomb. This is his channel.
Adam Marelli is a real deal artist trained in both sculpture and photography. He is a Leica and natural light guy. I cannot recommend his lectures on art design and photography high enough. Here is his channel.
Borut Peterlin is a wet-plate collodion photographer out of Slovenia. He’s weird in a good way. Most of his vids cover him making wet-plate glass negatives and prints. And here is his channel.
Brooke Shaden is a great photographic artist and inspirational speaker. She is the creator of the Promoting Passion series of conventions. While her work takes post processing to the extreme, in he work, there is no hiding that it is pure art that brings the impossible to life. Here is her channel.
Edwardo Pavez Goye has a facebook page and I don’t, so, yeah… Meanwhile, back at the ranch, he’s a playwrite, writer, street photographer and general fan of strange cameras. His reviews and videos of odd film cameras is what got me watching in the first place. Be advised, if you hate jazz (I do) the sound tracks to some of his vids will feel like chewing on aluminum foil, but the photos are usually worth it (Hello! X-Pan!). Eric Kim is a street photographer currently living in Vietnam with his beautiful wife Cindy. Again, he is probably one of the most positive people on the internet. His lecture vids are awesome. He is on tumblr and I have reblogged some of his stuff before.

So, right now you are prolly thinking whiskey tango foxtrot, oscar? Well, it’s good to support people who do good work. And while I cannot buy all their products or services, or fund their patreon accounts, I can help get the word out about them and help (just a little) to get them seen by a few more people.
Also, I might just introduce you to someone you have never heard of who makes you go, “Wow!” Or even just stop and think a moment about art or life or odd old cameras.
These are just the people I follow on YouTube. There are lots of other great artists out there that did not fit in that category, so they did not make this list. That does not mean there won’t be another list later.
