pale moonlight / hidden eclipse

a weirdly speific head canon, but hi yes let’s talk about a few important noble and knightly mannerisms and gestures that come from alain and alek’s home kingdom.

the bow

bowing is the most versatile and commonly seen gesture in the kingdom, used by nobles and commoners alike. a proper noble’s bow is performed by placing one’s right hand across their chest as their left hand extends palm out away from their body. this kind of positioning is one that leaves a person more or less open and unable to easily defend them self from attack.  a more casual form of a bow is done by simply tilting one’s body forward, with not special attention paid to one’s hand placement. the depth in which a person bows depends on the status and level of respect held towards the other.

the hand kiss

an optional part of greetings between men and women. a woman will offer her hand palm down at about chest height to the gentleman greeting her, at which time with his free hand he will grasp the offered one and while bowing place a light kiss upon her knuckles. 

this part of greetings can be considered incredibly flirtatious, and so in the case of family and elders it is also acceptable to place the woman’s hand briefly against one’s forehead instead of using a kiss as a show of respect. the same can be applied for married women as it is generally disrespectful to kiss such a woman even on the hand .

it is very important to note that it is considered incredibly impolite for a man to raise the hand of the woman, for any reason, to meet his height when this is being done as a greeting.

a kiss on the hand is also an incredibly common and popular form of public affection between lovers. 

kneeling

for knights and nobles alike kneeling hold rather deep meaning, and one will only kneel before two or three people in their lifetime; their lord and/or lady, and their spouse. nobles and knights alike kneel with their right knee on the ground, and the other bent. Their right hand is placed over their heart while the left is set atop their bent knee.

when one bows their head as well it carries the meaning of “i offer my neck to you” and thus such a stance is only used with those who have the person’s utmost respect and loyalty.

even if these hands and feet fall into darkness, even if my faith betrays me, i’ll continue to go where my friends wait, chasing destiny. i close my eyes and there lies a different world. flowers bloom in the place of a sword in my hand. a sweet breeze flows through this world. You know, thinking about it, something that would have been really jarring for the twins when they’re moved to earth would have to be fashion, particularly for women. I mean, their world has a medieval European like take on fashion and everyone dresses pretty modestly.

A basic respectable men’s outfit is at least 3 pieces; pants, shirt, and vest. While for the upper class and aristocrats it would also include at least a necktie of some sort and a jacket, and when going out an overcoat for the aristocrats.

For women a basic respectable outfit would be a blouse, under shirt, and a skirt that comes no higher than her ankles, alternatively a chemise and a one piece dress with a skirt that, again, comes no higher than her ankles. More well off women may also have a jacket of some sort, and of course the upper class and aristocrats have elaborate dresses that they wear. Hair is generally pulled up or covered somehow as well. Pants are also considered acceptable for women to wear, however it’s a rarer thing to see.

So Alain and Alek who are used to this kind of modest dressing earth clothing would be shocking. Raised as good young men of their world they’re able to manage, somehow, but the shock man. Especially in the summer when shorts and tank tops are a thing.
