Here's a little list for all the writers out there with the most common german petnames/terms of endearment for partners but also children and occasionally friends

Schatz

• literal meaning is "treasure"

• the english equivalent would be "honey" or "babe"/"baby"

• is used between partners and (grand)parents/children

• there's also "Schätzchen" but that's either used for small children or more commomly in a belittling way

Liebling

• there is no literal translation to english but it comes from the word "Liebe" which means "love"

• the english equivalent would be "darling"

• it can be used between partners as well as parents/children but partners is much more common

Liebes

• also has no literal translation to english but comes from the word "Liebe" just like "Liebling", it's basically another form

• the english equivalent would be "love" but keep in mind that the german noun "Liebe" can NOT be used as a petname like that

○ what you could do is add "meine/mein" (means my) but that is often used in a belittling way

Example

● "Thank you, Liebes" is right, "Thank you, Liebe" is wrong

-> you could do "Thank you, meine Liebe (female)/mein Lieber (male)" but that wouldn't be used between partners, more so from old people to young

● "Not in that tone, mein Lieber" is a sentence you hear from parents a lot though, so not in endearment but more as a 'warning'

Spatz/Spätzchen

• there is no english translation

• I can't think of a direct equivalent but "hun" probably comes close

• it's mostly used by elder people for small children, or their grandchildren (then age really doesn't matter, my grandma still calls me that)

Süße (female)/Süßer (male)

• literal translation would be a form of "sweet"

• therefore the closest english equivalent would be "sweetie"

• the male version "Süßer" is rarely used

○ some women and (gay) men use it in a flirty way but other than that I don't think I've ever heard it

• the female version "Süße" is much more commonly used between two close female friends or from a woman to a young girl

Example

• "Oh Süße, what's going on?"

Maus/Mausi/Mäuschen

• means "mouse"

• it's mostly used by parents for their young daughters although my mom still occasionally called me that when I was older and something was obviously going on (like me being sad because of something)

• is also an often petname between friends, just like "Süße"

Example

• "Oh Maus, what's going on?"

Okay, we've got A, who has a bestfriend B, a sister C and another brother D.

A is sure that bestfriend B is in love with his sister C and tells her. Sister C confronts bestfriend B who breaks down and tells her that he is actually in love with brother D. Sister C is supportive and wants to help bestfriend B to get closer to brother D.

They become close friends and A thinks sister C and bestfriend B are a couple. He wants to throw hands which then results in...

Option 1) Bestfriend B confesses that he is actually in love with brother D and brother D overhears it...

Or Option 2) Bestfriend B and brother D are already in a relationship and tell A, who then wants to throw hands again because how can Bestfriend B dare to date his brother?!

A is sick but still tries to work. After some hours of trying to be productive, they fall asleep at their desk.

B is stressed and when they see A sleeping instead of working, they get angry. They scream at A and yank them upwards, this causes A to faint, so B looks after them and apologizes for their behaviour.
