FFXIV NA - Bullying and Harassment in Duties

(DISCLAIMER: Before anyone assumes worst case, I am NOT referring to the entire community of NA, just some experiences I have had over the years of my play time.)

I have to ask... exactly WHAT do you gain from bullying and harassing your fellow players? what do you gain from belittling someone's ability to perform a mechanic properly? what do you gain from harassing a healer over their inability to heal? what do you gain from punishing a tank who forgets to turn on their tank stance?

There is nothing to gain... absolutely nothing to gain from telling someone "You're a bad healer" for all you know, said healer could have already been having a bad day in real life and it could be affecting their in-game performance.

There is nothing to gain from belittling fellow players "you're a dumbass" "you should just quit playing" "skill issue" "just do your job" while they may already have it rough or are just learning their way. Everybody, myself included, began as a learning player.

We can't expect everyone to know what to do, some players are rusty at their roles and skills because they were unable to log in for a long period of time. You do not know what goes on in their real lives outside of the MMO, and it is not your place to judge them. Not everyone has the same income to be able to keep their subscription, and not everyone is able to have free time to play. However... it is equally as bad for someone with elitist behavior to tell someone HOW they should do their roles or skill sets. You do not tell someone "This is the only way to do this part" "You're not pulling enough mobs for me, I'll bring them to you" or even "I'm the only one that can do this, you don't know how I do it"

Stop comparing Final Fantasy XIV to other MMOs as well, they are not all built the same, that is just one being narrow-minded.

It is all... nonsense... some of these harassers have mentor crows on their names, others think they're big shot and can compete with everyone because they feel intimidated by a skilled player.

Leave the competitiveness and intimidation on the PvP field, not in duties were you have to WORK AS A TEAM...

FFXIV - Tank / Healer / DPS Dynamic

{Something that has been on my mind for a long while now, since I've been playing between North American and Japanese servers of FFXIV. I often escape to my Japan alt due to the behaviors I witness and experience in North American servers that render me quite uncomfortable, and I want to address it.}

(Please bear in mind that this is NOT ALL of the community, but still quite heartbreaking I feel this way about the North American players as of recent.)

Tanks - Do not assume ever that your healers can take big pulls. This does not make them "weak" or have a "skill issue" as many English deem it. No, this means the healer is either still learning, or has a limit to how much they can take. You must be mindful on how much your healer is able to do, and be lenient on them rather than scolding them and calling them "bad healer". Because, the fault is not the healer for failing to heal, the fault is the tank for being ignorant and inconsiderate of their healer's limitations.

Healers - Do not ever run ahead, or pull for your tanks, that is a one-way trip to finding yourself in trouble. If your tank is "not pulling enough" that is not the tank's issue, it is your issue. A tank pulls however much they feel they can handle, your job is to adjust or request lighter pulls if the pull itself is too much for you. If you are unsatisfied with the pull, don't be a healer and jeopardize yourself and the entire party.

DPS - Same as healer; do not run ahead or pull for your tanks. Do not take over for the tank if they are not doing justice in your satisfaction. You are a damage dealer, you do not have the proper mitigations and are second-rate to a tank if you are melee/physical ranged DPS. Do not make your healers work twice or thrice as hard because of your recklessness and impatience on completing a duty. Magical ranged DPS are just as guilty of these, their damage ratio is greater, but it does not earn them the right to pull for their tanks.

Teamwork, respect, and patience is everything, having an elitist mindset and comparing apples to oranges, is the worst way to go about playing FFXIV. Even if you migrated from another MMO, FFXIV is NOT the same as your other MMO. Stop turning every little thing into an issue.

Dear North American XIV Players

I have noticed during my Oceana visit, some of you NA players were shouting your ad venues.

Do you not read? The developers posted a while ago well before testing began!

*CHARACTERS WITH A HOME WORLD IN THE OCEANA DATA CENTER WILL BE UNABLE TO TRAVEL TO A DIFFERENT PHYSICAL DATA CENTER

Apparently, a lot of you missed the memo when traveling to OCE for the first time.

Please be aware that the "opt-out" choice is just a way to try to appease people. But Tumblr has not been transparent about when has data been sold and shared with AI companies, and there are sources that confirm that data has already been shared before the toggle was even provided to users.

Also, it seems to include data they should not have been able to give under any circumstance, including that of deactivated blogs, private messages and conversations, stuff from private blogs, and so on.

Do not believe that "AI companies will honor the "opt-out request retroactively". Once they've got their hands on your data (and they have), they won't be "honoring" an opt-out option retroactively. There is no way to confirm or deny what data do they have: The fact they are completely opaque on what do they currently "own" and have, means that they can do whatever they want with it. How can you prove they have your data if they don't give everyone free access to see what they've stolen already?

So, yeah, opt out of data sharing, but be aware that this isn't stopping anyone from taking your data. They already have been taking it, before you were given that option. Go and go to Tumblr's Suppport and leave your Feedback on this (politely, but firmly- not everyone in the company is responsible for this.)

Finally: Opt out is not good under any circumstance. Deactivated people can't opt out. People who have lost their passwords can't opt out. People who can't access internet or computers can't opt out. People who had their content reposted can't opt out. Dead people can't opt out. When DeviantArt released their AI image generator, saying that it wasn't trained on people who didn't consent to it, it was proven it could easily replicate the styles of people who had passed away, as seen here. So, yeah. AI companies cannot be trusted to have any sort of respect for people's data and content, because this entire thing is just a data laundering scheme.

Llymlaen - Oi! Cut it out, you! (Japanese Variation)

I had to rely on North American playerbase for this. I set my client to Japanese in order to get the dialogue from the NPC.

Note: You can only get this specific dialoge by /blowkiss Llymlaen

Below is the normal English phrase- Llymlaen: Oi! cut it out, you! Now here is the Japanese variation- リムレーン : コラ！　しゃんとしなッ！

The translation? I took the time to do the work for you in translating this! "Come on! Get your ass in gear!" The more complete phrase rounds out the translation to this- "Come on! Shut up and get your ass in gear!"

It is always amazing how very different English and Japanese dialogues truly are, and what localization changes to them.

Hey, let's talk about anons like this, because I know some people haven't been in a position to see the patterns these play out in on broader scale and may indeed not spot the trap.

And it is a trap.

An ask like this has several purposes.

First, it uses social justice language in passive aggressive and manipulative ways to try to coerce a behavior. In this case, the desired behavior is usually for the recipent to participate in community shunning and/or harrassment. The language above is intended to put the recipient on the defensive where, in the haste to disassociate themself from the Bad Thing, they quickly disassociate themself from the bad person, often with no particular fact checking or evidence.

The message is also intended to create a sense of being surveilled and judged by an unknown amount of people with unknown amount of social power and an unknown amount of relevance to your life.

Notice that these asks are usually framed as if they are coming from a follower or potential follower, someone who is addressing you personally and who cares about your opinion and who your blog has an effect on. However this is usually.... very much not the case. If you've ever had the misfortune to watch a gossip campaign from like this from the outside, you will very quickly notice that messages like this get sent in mass batches to dozens and dozens of strangers. (You can often turn these up with a tumblr search, if you look.)

The sender does not know you and probably does not follow you. They have a person they don't like (possibly for their stated reason and possibly not), and they are going through the reblogs of a post from that blog and mass messaging *everyone* with a form letter. They will not see your response and they will probably never even see your blog again.

Which brings us to the second goal of whisper campaigns like this:

Notice that I blacked out the names above? That's because when the recipient answers anonymous asks like this, they provide a platform for the opinion on their blog. An anonymous message like this that gets posted doesn't just spread gossip and apply pressure to the recipient, it is spread to the recipient's entire community.

The *goal* is to get access to your community. The *goal* is to use you as a soapbox.

Is the information accurate? Did anyone check? Does the anon have an ulterior social motive? BIG SHRUG

If you go into the comments on one of these whisper campaigns you will see that *most people never bother to check.*

They assume good faith from a follower, they're off balance defending themselves, and they jump straight to conciliation.

It's a really, really effective form of social manipulation, and really really commonly misused.
