the rain fell softly and slowly outside your and Niall's house, while silence reigned inside. the raindrops and your breathing could be heard perfectly amidst the quiet, but even louder than that was the tension, which grew heavier with each passing second, almost like a clock ticking in front of you both, mocking.
Niall was sitting on the living room couch, his elbows resting on his knees, while you stood facing the window, gazing at the calm outside, almost ironic considering how tense things were in your shared house at the exact moment.
Niall was tense, you could see it on his face, but you'd be lying if you said you weren't too. There were many things left unsaid between the two of you, and it was as if now, in the darkness of the living room, fate was pushing you both to speak up.
"I know you're hiding something from me," you spoke, turning back a bit to look at him over your shoulder "You should tell me now."
"What do you even mean by that?" he asked, feigning confusion, but by the tremble of his voice, you could tell he already understood what this was about. "My mind's been a fog, okay? Ruben has been clawing at it all day's long-"
"Oh please, Niall, you know this isn't about Ruben. you always do this." you interrupted him.
you were exhausted, he needed to assert some control over his own life...how would he continue living blaming everyone else for his own mistakes? constantly blaming Ruben, his mother, everyone, everything, but himself.
"We have been dating for 7 months, and you...you're still acting strange. like this isn't how it was supposed to be. like this is wrong." you pointed out, frustrated, fully turning around and facing him now, he on the other hand, lowered his face, glaring at the floor like it was suddenly the most entertaining thing he ever saw.
"Okay." he nodded, still not looking up, talking like it hurt to talk. "You want the bare truth."
"I want to know why won't you let yourself just...be free, with me? it feels like you're always running away, closing yourself down." you sighed, taking some steps closer as you looked at him, trying to be comforting, cause you knew it was also hard to him.
he shook his head, eyes tearing up, so your suspicion probably was true, and you sat down next to him, stroking his back gently as he cried.
"Niall...look at me, its okay, i dont care whoever you like, girls or boys, i still do and will cherish you, even just as friends, i just want to hear the truth."
"No...its not that easy- dammit, Ruben will- will kill me if he finds out!" he said, now looking at you with those wide wet eyes, trembly with fear, as you frowned softly.
"You shouldn't care about Ruben, this isn't about him, it's about you." you looked at him softly for a few seconds. "does your mom know yet?"
"Yeah...she does." he said, looking down again like it ashamed him.
"God...Niall. what made you think you couldn't tell me?" i asked, trying to reassure him how i could
"My mom's were lesbians, okay? i know what it's like to be different, to not like what you're supposed to like, I've seen it my whole life. everybody judges you, you become the new selling joke of the neighborhood."
"Things are not like it was in the old times." you said, patting his shoulder affectionately before getting up from the couch "Think about it, yeah?"
just like that, you were gone upstairs to the room, letting Niall's truth sink into him, into his heart or brains. whatever worked. and now he had to deal again with the cold war inside his mind.
