Also on the subject of AI and navigating it, I found that something that works with older folk or people that don't understand why its casual use is bad is comparing what we have now with what we should have in terms of LLMs.

If I want to, say, translate Polish with AI, I should have a tool that accesses lawfully licensed, specific data sets. My Polish AI translator should only look at the textbooks and dictionaries and tell me what I need to know. What we have now with things like chatGPT is more akin to asking a rando how to translate something to Polish and then the rando travels the world and steals all the books on all the subjects from all the libraries then reads them all and takes notes then narrows it down and eventually finds the Polish words to read back to me, and in the meantime I've had to give them food and water and gas for their efforts, and soon I'll have to give them my computer and appliances for them to keep thinking about everything there ever was and talking to everyone ever and hallucinating to high hell. And all I needed was a sentence translated.

It's not the user's fault that we asked for a butter knife and they gave us a nuke, but we should know not to deploy it if we can avoid it.

(Oh and we're definitely paying for that nuke too, just not as a direct debit)

Ch. 1: The Not-So-Cute Meet-Cute "Cupcakes and Misfits" New CaitVi Fic

It all started with a cupcake.

Years later, Caitlyn would say that visiting the cafe that fateful day to treat herself was the best decision she would make in her life.

Vi would tease that only Caitlyn would consider getting robbed to be the best thing to ever happen to her.

OR

Alternative meet-cute of teenage Vi and Caitlyn with sprinkles of pining, a dash or two of angst, and extra adorably awkward seventeen-year-olds falling in love.

The cupcake in question was stunning. A rich, dark fudge sponge filled with the promise of white chocolate hidden inside, topped with perfectly piped red icing in the shape of a flower, and a shake of edible glitter that made it glint beautifully in the sunlight. Caitlyn stared at the treat inside its see-through plastic container, her mouth watering as she forced herself not to tear into the packaging and stuff it in her mouth. She had spent three weeks preparing for the grueling, infamous chemistry final that Mr. Ratke gave out to all of his eleventh years at Piltover Academy, and she’d be damned if she allowed impatience to ruin her reward. Her wonderment at the flavors that awaited her was interrupted by a tap on her shoulder. She turned to see who it was, only to feel her delicious prize yanked from her grasp. Caitlyn was about to shout in alarm when a powerful shoulder slammed against her so hard she went sprawling on the ground, wincing at the sharp pain of pebbles from the sidewalk that tore into the skin of her forearm through the maroon sleeve of her Academy uniform. Glancing up in shock, she only got a glimpse of pink hair sprinting away from her, the sun flashing off the glitter on her treat as her assailant disappeared with it down the street.

I say this in the endnotes of my fic, but for all those who are reading my unfinished fics:

I know that I usually finish fics before starting a new one, but I am from Minnesota and live very close to where much of the awfulness is happening in the Twin Cities. The contents of my other CaitVi fic and my KPDH fic are both pretty heavy at the moment, so it's been hard to get into a headspace to write heavy themes when my reality is even heavier. Fanfic writing is an escape for me, so when I felt inspired to write a more whimsical, cutesy story, I didn't question it and followed where my mind clearly needed to go. Now, this wouldn't be a caitlynkirammansrifle fic without some angst, so I haven't completely jumped ship on my brand, but it's much, much lighter than what I usually write. I promise I'll get back to the other fics when they will be a form of escape for me once again, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later.

Reach out to your neighbors – especially if you know they are staying home right now – and ask if they need groceries or toiletry items. Offer to pick up prescriptions, give rides, or shovel their driveway. If you know them well, bring them a treat that you know they'll enjoy. Or just ask them how they're doing and let them know you are there to support.

Connect with any of the orgs above and see if they are looking for volunteers.

Connect with a church or mosque in your area. From u/MuddieMaeSuggins: "I know a lot of regular Redditors are not religious (myself included) but like it or not this is a where a lot of community organizing happens, especially in immigrant communities."

Connect with your local school's admin office and/or their PTA. It's ok to reach out even if you don't have kids at the school. PTAs are organizing mutual aid for school families, safe rides, school observers.

🩵Activism

Find an official protest or other event via Indivisible, 50501, FREE AMERICA, or MIRAC. Students at many high schools are staging walk-outs; if your local school is doing this, reach out to school leadership or the PTA and ask how you can support as a community member.

Join the effort to stop Hilton from housing ICE by booking hotel rooms and then cancelling at the last minute. This action can be done from home! The effort is being organized by Sunrise Movement, who are telling activists to target specific hotels one-by-one. More info: SHUT DOWN HILTON

Find people in your area who are actively monitoring ICE and/or stationing themselves in high-traffic areas and ask how you can help. Check for local FB events where people are organizing and just show up.

At minimum, read the COPAL Handbook before you go out to observe. The DFL, Monarca, and other orgs have been hosting online trainings for constitutional observers (though these fill up quickly).

When you see ICE in action, start recording. Be as loud and as disruptive as possible: honk your horn, set off your car alarm, blow your whistle. Let people know that ICE is in the area. If you see someone being detained, try to get their name and a phone number to call their emergency contact.

If you do not feel comfortable observing ICE in person, there are ways you can support from home. Just ask the people who are organizing in your area. I have social anxiety, and I had never participated in any kind of political action before this past Saturday. If I can do it, you can!

Local organizers are requesting that people who help monitor ICE DO NOT participate in 1-to-1 mutual aid efforts, as these can put the families you are helping at risk.

If you have friends/acquaintances who are sympathetic but not politically active, reach out to them. Show them that they're not alone in feeling helpless. Pick a few low-commitment actions from this list and do them together.
