Moroccan âIgudarâ granaries, dating back to the 1400s, are considered among the worldâs oldest banking systems. Built by the Amazigh people in southern #Morocco, particularly around Agadir, they served as secure communal storage for grains, valuables, and documents, with each family assigned its own compartment overseen by a key holder known as the Amin. Some larger granaries also included communal spaces and functioned as shelters during crises. The Amazigh, Moroccoâs original inhabitants for over 4,000 years, preserved their traditions even after the arrival of the Arabs in the 7th century, and in 2011, their language, Tamazight, was made official alongside Arabic.
