It's very simple you see. I love The Magisterium but I hate The Magisterium and it makes me want to set my copies of the books on fire but it's a fundamental part of who I am and I think about it every day for at least an hour and I haven't reread the books in over a year but I still remember everything in incredible minutiae and I think that if The Magisterium never existed the world would be better place and we would all be so much worse off and I never want there to be an adaptation but if there isn't one I will spend the rest of my life wanting one and I think it's some of the best writing of all time and I think it's the worst thing I've ever read and no one should ever read it. Understand?

I will NEVER be over the fact that Alastair became an air elemental for Call. Like he clearly has severe PTSD around magic even if the books never use that word. He spends a huge chunk of Iron Trial and TCG trying to save Call from the world of mages, whether or not Call needs saving. His whole adult life has been at war or trying to recover from the loss of literally all of the people in his life.

And then he gives up everything he's managed to rebuild, gives up his mortality, gives up Call himself, the one person we're shown that he has, to become a physical manifestation of his trauma, on the desperate hope that it will give his son a life. What the fuck

I still think TSM had the best bare bones ideas for a plot, but having grappled with it recently.... TGT also has such good plot ideas?? Obviously I'm discounting Maugris Miserable bc he's unsalvageable, but almost everything else? Call regaining memories, Aaron living in Call's head, finding a body for Aaron, confronting how Alex has been devastated in much the same way as Call and Constantine (and whose fault that is *coughcough* Joseph and the Assembly *coughcough*), trying to rebuild a relationship with Tamara and Jasper after the betrayal, being forced back into mage society after The Big Reveal. Alastair BECOMING MAGIC to save Call. All of this ideas are so so SO good. How did we get here (<- actual text of TGT)

Interesting angle on Constantine I don't think has seen much exploration: What's death to a necromancer? Sure, Constantine and the followers of the Enemy of Death kill lots of people, including Constantine's former friends and innocent children, but at the same time, Constantine is convinced he's going to find out how to reverse death. What does it matter if he kills them so long as he's able to bring them back?

I think it would have been fun if there had been more cancer symbolism tied to Constantine and his rebirth as Call. IDK how they should have done this but I know Callum "Call wants to live" Hunt would have listened to Master Rufus talking about how cancer cells have their self-destruct signal turned off or how cancer can metastasize and felt sick

Emerging from my hole in the ground to say that I'm convinced that there was a major dropped plotline that had to do with Call's mother and Semiramis. No idea what it was but given that TBK was supposed to be called The Cosmos Blade, I think it's a pretty safe bet.

To make predictions about a book that will never happen... I think it probably would have focused more on the original Rufus apprentice group, and particularly on Sarah, given that the only notable blade in the series is hers. I think it would have established parallels or contrast (probably contrast lbr) between Anastasia and Sarah leading up to the Eliza reveal and made Anastasia's offers of family and affection in The Golden Boy and The Enemy of Death (the original titles for TSM and TGT) more potent. I still think Aaron would have died at the end and that Alex would be the one to kill him, but maybe more elaboration on Anastasia and Alex's relationship? Also, more elaboration on what made Sarah willing to kill Call.

Based purely on the ~~vibes~~, I think it might have been something like the Devoured of Chaos thing from TGT.

You can never convince me that Aaron would ever forgive Tamara and Jasper for betraying Call in TSM. For betraying him, maybe, but Call? Aaron would have arrested Celia for having a crush on Call if he had the option

I think the thing is that the Magisterium is permanently associated with summer in my mind bc I thought about it a ton on that miserable road trip five (!!) years ago and then I reread it to destress when I got home, and now the whole season smells like the water and sounds like Bastille played through cheap headphones and tastes like bad spaghetti and feels my hands cramping up from writing outlines of fics I'll never finish. I don't miss that time, exactly, but I do smile when I think about it.

I've changed a lot over five years. It's nice to know my love of these books keeps changing with me (:
