This is definitely an article everyone should read before enrolling in a bootcamp or an online class.
Before we delve into the many learning options available here in Singapore, I think it’s really good to recap and refresh some basic manners all of us should have in class. I’ve personally encountered many adults with bad learning habits and it certainly disrupted the class. Anyone is welcome to learn how to code. Some of the WDA programmes are even targeted at mid-career professionals. What this means is that many of you guys are going back to the classroom after a prolonged period of absence and may have forgotten how to be a courteous student. Well, here are some reminders.
1. Learn to differentiate between the lecturer and the teaching assistants (TA).
What is the difference? The lecturer is the person standing in front of the class teaching. A good class will probably have one or two TAs arounds to help guide the students when they encounter difficulties following the class. Many times students experiencing issues will raise their hand and interrupt the lecturer. This really, I repeat REALLY, annoys the rest of the class. Especially when it’s done so repeatedly. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE LECTURER UNLESS IT’S REALLY URGENT. Instead, get the TA’s attention and ask the TA to clarify your doubts.
This may seem minor but imagine if everybody in class starts doing that. Soon, nobody will be able to follow the class because the lecturer has to stop every few minutes.
2. Silent all your mobile devices.
Even your laptop. I really cannot emphasize enough on that. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard phones and laptop notifications going off.
3. Don’t be afraid to click around.
Sometimes all it takes is a few clicks buried under certain tabs. Don’t be afraid to click around and explore the various tabs in the programme. Try to use whatever you’ve learnt to do some initial troubleshooting. This will also help you further absorb the concepts gone through in class. It is super satisfying and empowering when you are able to debug or solve issues by yourself, no matter how tiny it is. This personal quality is also something that many employers look for. So click around, play with the programme. If you cannot undo or revert something back to its original state, look for the TA. Not the lecturer. The TA.
4. Google is truly your best friend.
I know, you probably heard this a lot of times. But one of the most important skill to pick up is how to search for answers online. I’ll be sharing a few sites that all coding beginners should be aware of. A lot of times the answers to our questions are posted online. New students need to learn what terms to search for and where to find the answers. Don’t just depend on your instructors to spoon feed you answers. Try your best to search for answers online, understand the logic flow behind it and apply it to your code. Ask only when you cannot understand the solution found online and this will help you digest the concepts learnt.
5. Revise, revise revise!
Do a brief revision before you go to bed. Especially if you’re paying for a bootcamp. If you do not retain the concepts taught during class, it is likely that you hindering your own progression and wasting money. Just a short recap of the few major major processes taught in class. You can always refer to your notes regarding syntax(the way the code is written) but, if you keep forgetting the flow and processes, your progress is going to be limited.

Awesome! ElementaryOS is super easy to use. It is absolutely gorgeous. In fact, it is the most beautiful OS I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. Because it is an Ubuntu-based distro, there are abundant support articles online.
The latest long-term support(LTS) version is Freya. As with most open-source software, it is free. You can download the iso file and create a bootable usb stick with it to try it out.
Definitely a distro that I will recommend to newcomers. A++
Hey, guys! Welcome to my blog. This is a blog for coding beginners in Singapore. Here, I’ll be documenting my learning journey as well as any useful tips for you noobcoders out there in SG! Although, this also serves as a refresher for what I’ve learnt so far. Heh. Feel free to hit the ask button! I’ll try my best to answer all your questions.
Coding has really garnered a lot of interest worldwide. Of course, our sunny Singapore is no exception. Lots of new bootcamps have started in Singapore. In the next couple of days, I’ll be blogging a little bit about those. I’ll also try to share as many useful articles as I can. Or at least, those that I found to be really helpful and effective at explaining certain concepts.
Lastly, I wanna extend a warm welcome to all the fellow noobcoders out there! Truth is that coding is tough as hell. But it is definitely just as, if not even more, rewarding when you manage to code something that actually works. Hang in there and I’m sure we’ll become proficient and competent soon.
