I told my little nephew that I'd wave at his airplane when it flew over my house today, and he very calmly and politely explained that it wouldn't be possible to see me due to the limitations of human vision. I said he just had to squint real hard, and he took a deep breath and went into the toddler version of "see, what you're not understanding–"

Antis will claim that they are “protecting children” but then call people who harm fictional children pedophiles. But as a victim of CSA myself, I find it super offensive and harmful when these antis throw around the word pedo to anyone and anything that mildly makes their fragile little brain uncomfortable.
No. People who fantasize fictional children are NOT pedophiles because for someone to be that, they have to have harmed real children. A real child that I used to be when I was assaulted.
So by calling everyone who harms fictional children a pedophile, you’re dismissing my trauma and experience by reducing it to ***fictional kids being harmed*** and you’re actually helping real pedophiles who harm real children like me get away with it easier because now people have associated the word with “dark fiction” instead of real life harm, thanks to you.
So it’s antis who ARE harming real children because they want to protect fictional ones. Fuck off.
I was a CSA victim, and I say “let dark ship enjoyers write whatever they want”. They’re not harming real kids like you do.
Not to mention, a lot of victims like me use dark fiction to help us cope with our trauma. So not only are antis helping actual pedophiles get away with harming real children easier, they’re also calling CSA victims pedophiles because we write about fictional things that make them uncomfortable (even though we never force anybody to read our shit).
I don’t want to see these people claim to be good people ever again.

One time I came home from uni very upset and my younger siblings asked what's wrong. I said that mutated flies in our lab escaped because someone broke their jar. I didn't even realise how scary it sounded to them until I saw their faces lmao. I was upset because we were short on said flies (they don't reproduce very well) and my siblings thought that some crazy radioactive fly monsters escaped and we are all fucked now. Love being a mad scientist in their eyes lowkey

Calling myself out
I usually hate seeing people being stiffed for their labor but I think it’s very funny ICE agents have not been getting their $50k sign on bonus, many are still waiting for their healthcare benefits to kick in and some are complaining they haven’t been getting their paychecks. You sold your soul to the Exploiting and Abusing People Agency and they started exploiting you too? Wow. Crazy.
I heard if they lose their job for any reason within 5 years (likely) they have to pay back the $50k in full. Like before taxes 🤭
They don't even get $50k. They get a sign-on bonus of $10k and then $10k/year after that. And that money is taxed really harshly. Like, the IRS yanks at least a couple thousand out of it.
If it's paid as a bonus instead of standard contract pay, it's taxed nearly 10% more than standard income where I live. I'm pretty sure thats federal tax law, but I don't have time to check.

I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.
I hit on some character insights while writing a fic
Grace hates making decisions. He eats the same damn thing for breakfast every day and has had the same order at the same restaurant for dinner every Thursday for literal years because it’s easier than trying something new.
He does fine once he’s in a situation. He’ll put his head down and hang in there and get it done. That's what Stratt was counting on, of course, but that's got lots of other uses. It's probably how he got through grad school even though academia was apparently not for him. He did the job in front of him and/so that he could avoid REALIZING it wasn't something he actually enjoyed anymore.
On that note, leaving academia? In the book (which, of course, is filtered through Grace's own perceptions and so usual unreliable narrator caveat), he didn't yell at anyone at a conference. He decided he'd quit academia and wrote that paper calling people out by name on his way out. That could very well be deliberately (...though probably not with any self-awareness) closing out that avenue so that he couldn't second-guess himself. He can put himself in a situation, maybe, as long as he's not paying attention to what he's doing while he's doing it.
Similarly, when he leaves his classroom and drives recklessly over to the lab, finds Stratt's team packing it up, and demands to keep working on the project? He says himself that's out of character. "I drove fast. Way too fast. I ran red lights. I cut people off. I never do any of that, but that day was different. That day was…I don’t even know." [This bit is really good in the audiobook, btw.] He was upset and decisive, and maybe even outrunning his own hesitation here.
The guy’s got so much affection to give and he's so fucking scared of connection. Teaching is great. He can care about "his kids" in a nice, relatively abstract way and then they're gone.
