wei wuxian who can never keep a boyfriend for more than a month. he always tells his best friend lan wangji all about the guy, and asks his honest opinion on him. lan wangji rarely has anything truly good to say about them.
“he should drive you home more often.”
“you told me he said your shorts were ‘too short’. thats none of his business.”
“he doesn’t take care of you properly.”
its not that lan wangji is trying to sabotage wei wuxian’s relationships (even if he is hopelessly in love with him) he wants wei wuxian to be happy, and its just that no one is good enough for him. and wei wuxian trusts his best friends bullshit detector, he’s been right so far. so every time wei wuxian’s new boyfriend does something, he asks lan wangji what he should do and every time lan wangji says “whatever wei ying wants”
wei wuxian always breaks up with them.
its a continuous cycle, until one guy comes around. lan wangji can’t find a single thing wrong with him. he’s kind to wei wuxian, takes care of him, makes him laugh, he’s practically perfect. he’s even great in person, and he has no problem with wei wuxian and lan wangji’s closeness. wei wuxian seems happy, and lan wangji can’t bring himself to hate him (is he jealous? sure! but thats different)
“what do you think i should do?” wei wuxian asks, head leaned on lan wangji’s shoulder after his boyfriend leaves wei wuxian’s apartment. the man had kissed wei wuxian at the door and told him he’d call him goodnight. terribly sweet.
“whatever wei ying wants.” lan wangji replies, so wei wuxian stays with him. a month passes, one month turns to two, and before either wei wuxian or lan wangji know, six months have passed.
“i love you.” wei wuxian’s boyfriend says, staring deeply into his eyes. he’d brought him to a romantic (expensive) restaurant, paid for dinner and dessert, and listened intently all throughout their conversations. there was no reason for wei wuxian to say he didn’t love him back. nothing but the truth. nothing but the fact that he wasn’t who wei wuxian wishes who he was.
“i’m sorry.” wei wuxian says and runs out of the restaurant, not looking back. he catches a taxi, and tells them where he wants to go without hesitating. he knows. knows where he wants to be. who he wants to be with. once there, he knocks on the door before he can second guess himself. lan wangji opens the door, surprised, and before he can say anything-
“i love you.” wei wuxian blurts out. “im in love with you, lan zhan.”
lan wangji stares at him for several seconds, taking the words in. when lan wangji doesn’t say anyting, wei wuxian begins to regret his decision. he opens his mouth to take explain himself, but lan wangji takes his face in his hands and kisses him. hard and passionate and desperate, like he’d been waiting for those words to come out of wei wuxians lips. he had. they kiss in the doorway for what feels like an eternity of paradise. mouths slotting together like they were made for each other. finally breaking away, they rest their foreheads together.
“love you.” lan wangji pants. “in love with you, wei ying.”
wei wuxian kisses him again.
a week later (after wwx’s ex-boyfriend is successfully dumped) wei wuxian tells lan wangji about this new guy he’s seeing. tall, kind, smart, strong, sexy, funny in a weird way, an absolute dreamboat, wei wuxian says.
“what should i do?” he asks, snuggled next to lan wangji in bed.
lan wangji presses a kiss to wei wuxian’s neck. “whatever wei ying wants.”
“hmmmm.” wei wuxian taps his chin. “and if i want you?”
and then a year later they get married and live happily ever after. the end!
