For years before I joined the Dropbox illustration team, I assumed the Dropbox illustrators had it easy. I imagined talented people getting to make great work for an organization that believed deeply in the power of illustration.
The Lean Startup methodology has as a premise that every startup is a grand experiment that attempts to answer a question.
On a rainy afternoon in the fall of 2005 we were driving back from a meeting with a potential customer of my startup, BackupAgent. They just told us they were going to buy over 40.000 euro of backup software, which would allow their users to backup data from their computers to their datacenters.
There are many techniques to consider when designing an effective lean startup experiment, so we decided to capture a few of our favorites below. Mix-and-match each example to create a powerful experimental learning vehicle for your next concept.

Building a great product is hard. Building a great product without a plan that accounts for iteration, quality control and user feedback is nearly impossible. That’s where a well crafted product roadmap comes in, something Janna Bastow knows all about.
This is the AARRR (Must Read!) startup metrics model developed by Dave Mcclure. These 5 metrics represent all of the behaviors of our customers. We want to break down these 5 metrics on your product and look at them separately, then analyze and monitor them so that we can optimize them.

Warning: This is a post about branding, but I’m no brand expert. For most of my career, any mention of the word brand made me uncomfortable. I figured it was a fine line between “brand exercise” and “total waste of time.”
After working 4 years in the field of digital design I got obsessed with tidying up and sorting information. This lead to the creation of a systematic approach for designing user interfaces. It is an object-oriented, programming-inspired approach, a collection of various ideas that are universal.
This guide is meant to help designers lay out UI quickly and consistently. It’s particularly helpful for designing mobile app UI where there are fixed constraints, though I find it useful for responsive web design as well.
