I think that Simon should be strong enough to carry some eridians (benefits of facing a god and having survive or something), and this also gives him the ability to carry and throw pebbles around.

This leads to the fact that when Grace, with the help of Rocky to chaperone, finally takes a school trip inside the dome, the curious pebbles approach Simon, because he doesn't visit the classroom a lot and he stays for such a short time that he is a mystery for the pebbles. Simon, not quite knowing how to entertain them, simply starts juggling with them.

In my mind he is doing the juggling single armed, because he would always be an amputee in my eyes, but those are details.

The pebbles are having the time of their lifes; Simon is happy of making the pebbles giggling while he can exercise his reflects; Rocky is horrofied, but he also kinda of wants to know how it feels to be a juggling ball; Grace is having a heart attack.

Grace: Simon! Leave those pebbles in the ground in this instant!

Simon surprised by Grace's authoritarian and angry voice leaves the pebbles in the ground, where Rocky make sure to check than they aren't hurt.

Grace, crossing his arms and looking at Simon: You are in time out.

Simon, who had never been treated like a child before: Time out?

Grace, getting red of anger: Yes! Time out!

And Simon who is not sure why he is obeying Grace orders, but sure that he has to, ends having to stand looking to one of the big rocks in the beach while he reflect in his actions and why they were wrong.

The pebbles, who have already know the suffering of been in time out, give Simon small pats in his feet and legs as a consolation, and promise him that they can still play after his punishement is finish, that they will wait for him, to which Simon nods determinate.

Grace is so moved by the little act of camaraderie than ends reducing 10 minutes from Simon's time out.

The whole movie scene where Grace calls Stratt to say that Carl and him made a baby is made 1000% funnier when you remember that this was the scientist she selected to be the first to study the completely unpresidented and unknown alien life form, and if this alien lifeform had a horrifying and unpresidented effect on human biology then Dr. Grace would have been the first to have shown any symptoms.

Do you think she had a moment of terror? of belief? Do you think her fingers twiched over her tablet ready to give the orders to quarentine everyone who ever interacted with the apperently slow acting mpreg microbe? Did her mind go to every Alien movie and ao3 trope that could have explained the situation? Did she wonder briefly about the ethical and political implications of keeping a maybe sentient maybe alien child? with human parent(s)???? in a pseuto-governmental lab?

Did she wonder exactly what Carl's role in this is? Because even if shes only known Dr. Grace for three days max and cannot yet be certain of the immence aroace vibes the man radiates Carl is a professional on the job so how was he involved?? Is he just the embodyment of the "not the step father but the father who stepped up"???? should she buy him a t-shirt with that phrase?????? Is he biologically involved in a way that only a biologist of esoteric slime molds or insects or sea cucumbers would recognise?????? Is she going to have to kidnap a mycologist to understand this????????? What exactly is her policy on paternity leave according to Project Hail Mary's closest orginizational structure to an HR department and how is she going to explain this to the UN.

I know the choice to change Stratt from Dutch to German in the film was largely a result of casting Sandra Hüller (who was perfect in the role, so like, I get it) but honestly the more I roll it around in my head the more the politics of it compel me.

Thinking about Stratt--who has such a unique blend of optimism and cynicism, willing to place Earth's hopes in an interstellar mission but approaching making it happen in such a ruthlessly pragmatic way--growing up as a kid in East Germany and living through die Wende and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc is just really politically fascinating. Partly because Stratt herself is so politically fascinating, but there's also something else there, something that speaks to growing up watching protests and upheaval on one side of the Iron Curtain, only to end up working for the extremely international European Space Agency as an adult (and then transition into leading the even more international Petrova Taskforce). In that context, movie!Stratt has seen both human conflict and human cooperation in spades, and I could see it hugely informing her perspective on the Hail Mary mission.

In any case. I'm still chewing on the implications of all this, but like I said, it does really compel me.

#still baffled by how such a politically interesting character was made by someone not interested in politics...

It's because Weir is interested in politics, he just doesn't realize it because his framework for what counts as "political" is really bad and narrow.

Weir's books (or at least The Martian and Project Hail Mary, I can't speak for Artemis which I haven't read) are incredibly interested in themes of international cooperation. Which is, of course, the definition of political. In The Martian, a number of countries' space agencies work together to help get Mark Watney home; in Project Hail Mary the eponymous project is the work of the entire international community and the mission is meant to be an multinational one, even if only Ryland Grace actually survives. That's incredibly political and not on accident. International cooperation -- which is one of the things that contributes to Stratt being such a fascinating character -- is clearly a theme Weir cares about and returns to frequently in his writing.

However, Andy Weir (being a cishet white American man) thinks politics are for other people. I can almost guarantee you that a large part of his personal definition of the political revolves around identity politics, which he thinks he's exempt from as a "normal" person who exists outside of those othering categories (heavy on the sarcasm, of course). Politics are things like racial equality and pronouns, something that, in his mind, exist independently from the scientific cooperation he's fascinated by and keeps returning to in his work. Which is deeply incorrect, but a view that a lot of people nonetheless hold.

I point all this out because it's a great example of when authors do manage to put interesting themes into their work that some people dismiss as an accident, but it's really a bit more complicated than that. It's not necessarily an accident that Weird finds international cooperation fascinating and even important. I think it's even pretty safe to say it's something that he put into his work on purpose. He just doesn't recognize it as political. Which is bizarre, and indicative of a very privileged worldview, but it doesn't necessarily make Eva Stratt a total fluke. It just means you gotta really Death of the Author this one in order to point out what she represents.

Okay I know we all love "Rocky swears non-stop all the time" but have any of us considered that after four years of being shipmates with Grace and probably Grace somehow implementing a swear jar Rocky now only shouts grade school teacher level non-curses when pissed off.

Like he's working on a project with other Eridians and accidentally breaks something and shouts HORSEFEATHERS and now all of the other Eridians are losing their shit

Ooh, what if over the course of the trip to Erid, Rocky and Grace develop an entire competitive game around swearing or the lack thereof? There’s a whole convoluted system for awarding and docking points based on the usage frequency of any spoken curse words (either minced or ‘real’), creativity in inventing new ones, etc.

Rocky is intrigued at the human-language ability to convey - solely with tone and context - that a completely-unrelated-to-swearing word is currently being used as a swear word; it’s one of the very very very few areas where he will concede that Earth spoken language can do something that spoken Eridian does not typically do.

Grace and Rocky work together to glean enough computer knowledge from the Internet backup that they can program Mary to track which swear words they each use in a given period of time from an established list. Generally, points get deducted for repeating specific swears that either of them have already used, unless those swears are being combined in an innovative string of cursing where the repetitiveness penalty is outweighed by the combo bonus.

In the end, the game is mostly just an excuse for Rocky and Grace to cheerfully bicker about a lighthearted and non-stressful subject.

We always talk about how Stratt is haunted by Grace's screams and cries at night, but what about Carl?

Carl, the guy Grace built an entire hypothesis around.

Carl, the guy that learned to have fun with Grace while doing science.

Carl, the guy that fueled Grace's addiction to Skittles and Twizzlers.

Carl, the guy that was there every step of the way until the end. And then he was forced to stand by and watch as Grace was pinned to the ground, pleading for help, calling for him of all people.

I'm willing to bet Carl is kept awake just as much as Stratt was if not more so, utterly tortured by what he'd done to Grace.

I've seen so many posts lately about how Grace wouldn't add swears to their translator but I 100% think he did.

He's not morally against swearing, he said holy fucking shit when he saw the Blip-A for the first time, the only reason he doesn't swear normally is because he trained himself out of it because he teaches middle schoolers. If I'm remembering right, he even calls one of the kids a smartass in his internal narration at one point. He's spent so long not swearing that he's not just going to fall out of the habit immediately.

We know that at some point, he learned Eridian swearing anyway because Rocky swears in the final chapter of the book. And I think he learned most of them when Rocky reamed him out after leaving the taumoeba collector out at room temp.

Plus, Rocky is an adult and Grace treats him like one, which includes adding swear words into their translator so that Rocky can express himself.
