Idk who needs to hear this but non-Native people who want to build a communist or socialist state to replace Canada & the US are just as colonialist as their capitalist counterparts.
If the movement doesn’t prioritize returning governance to Indigenous people it’s just colonizing but a little to the left
Ok, so let’s talk a little more about the Land Back movement. I saw a ton of white nonsense in the notes comparing the call to return indigenous land to indigenous people to—I shit you not—Nazi Germany and ethnonationalism. We’re not even going to give those clowns a debate platform. We’re just here to laugh at them. That said, I also saw legitimately good points asking where this movement would leave Black people who, while not Native, are certainly not colonizers. Land Back is inherently a movement for Indigenous people and descendants of slaves. It should and does include reparations for the land loss and theft experienced by slaves post-emancipation (the effects of which are still seen and felt today).
All this said, Land Back means different things to different indigenous people and their tribes.
Some really do literally mean the return of U.S. land to tribal nations and ADOS is something that SHOULD happen, but we’re not a bunch of idiots. We understand that’s not a pragmatic or achievable solution (currently) and return of land =/= forcibly removing or committing mass genocide of people that don’t look like us. That’s something only savages do, and we have never been savages.
Other times it means protecting Turtle Island, all of us who live here, as a collective. Love the land and the land will love us back. Land back = the key to restoring ecosystems. Listen to indigenous people. We have always known these lands better than y’all.
It is also an empowering political statement from indigenous leaders to their people, to keep fighting for our treaties, for the right to self-govern, to continue the long process of de-colonizing ourselves, to harness our own power, to restore our cultures.
As far as literal repatriation of land goes, it’s not a far fetched or impossible idea. It has been done and is being done. It’s far from simple, but land stewardships, land trusts, and land transfers are all legal mechanisms to achieve this. And it doesn’t mean you (the donor) must leave the land. Oftentimes it means paying taxes to the tribe itself but still being able to live on/use the land; it just makes it so that the land has been returned to the tribe. In theory this would be the solution for indigenous people getting our land back without this big dramatic forced exodus of white people that racists pretend to be so worried about. It’s too complicated to really delve into here but this is a good link for a brief overview of the idea behind it.
And remember, today is a good day to stop being a low life piece of fucking garbage in the ✨ notes ✨

i CANNOT stop thinking about david foster wallace saying “there’s a lot of narcissism in self-hatred” i CANNOT stop
people are now commenting on this post and taking offence. you guys do realize that… this is not an insult or jibe at people who suffer from self-esteem issues right? that the narcissism he points out is not necessarily the egotistical or cruel kind?
what he’s saying is that self-hatred blinds you from the world around you and prevents you from having a more objective and rational view at yourself. it stops you from distancing yourself, see how your actions affect the people around you and how they are themselves feeling, and makes you overanalyze every single thing about you which furthers the self-hate. it’s a vicious circle that dooms you to be far too conscious of every single thing that you believe is “wrong” with you. it becomes an unhealthy obsession and the best we can do to counter it sometimes is acknowledge it.
So I just heard about “Primed: The Back Pocket Guide for Trans Men and the Men Who Dig Them.” It’s the first sexual health resource written by and for gay, bi and queer trans men/ transmasculine people, put out by Rainbow Health Ontario, and it’s a very frank guide that answers basically any questions you might have about safer sex. They’ve released it for free download here.
A similar guide geared towards trans women/ transfeminine people (though not really sexual orientation specific) is “BRAZEN: Trans Women’s Safer Sex Guide.”
i think it is very depressing that like every aesthetic people try to emulate are of people doing things but they themselves are incapable of being somebody that does things… the mall goth 2005 aesthetic revived in 2022 but nobody goes to the mall to be annoying and weird and nobody lets themselves be cringe… the cottagecore aesthetic but nobody knows how to raise gardens or live self sufficiently … the dark academia aesthetic but nobody actually reads books…. The obsession of looking like you are a type of person who does something without actually doing anything … the Instagram effect
we need to bring back the word Poser
ohhhh my fucking god this isn’t about hipsters and mainstream culture or fucking whatever . This is about how we’re living in an age that is so dependent on social media identity that it is more important to curate yourself as someone who appears as though they are competent and substantial through their appearance rather than their actions . Where your identity and sense of self is entirely dependent on your consumption
Not at all made up statistics from Chained Girls (Joseph P. Mawra, 1965)
What a journey this life is! dependent, entirely, on things unseen. If your lover lives in Hong Kong and cannot get to Chicago, it will be necessary for you to go to Hong Kong. Perhaps you will spend your life there, and never see Chicago again. And you will, I assure you, as long as space and time divide you from anyone you love, discover a great deal about shipping routes, airlines, earthquake, famine, disease, and war. And you will always know what time it is in Hong Kong, for you love someone who lives there. And love will simply have no choice but to go into battle with space and time and, furthermore, to win.
I know we often lose, and that the death or destruction of another is infinitely more real and unbearable than one's own. I think I know how many times one has to start again, and how often one feels that one cannot start again. And yet, on pain of death, one can never remain where one is. The light. The light. One will perish without the light.
James Baldwin, “Nothing Personal.” 1964.
