I'll also add that surprisingly, using only water, my head smells.... Well like a head. Nothing completely foul or akin to body odor. Smells faintly like scalp after 2-3 days after a shampoo. But mind you this smell itself lessens and I only smell it after touching my scalp. So far no one has given me the stink face even though I'm shorter than most and my head is closer to people's' noses lol. Stay strong through the transition and it'll be all gravy after that. Cheap and easy maintenance.

Just wanted to say something for people willing to go to extremes and just wash with water only. I've been using water only and a cheap boar brush to keep my hair clean and it's the best my hair has ever felt/looked. I did however stay at a hotel with shower filters and I noticed it made a HUGE difference. My hair felt almost like it was shampooed, light, bouncy and well behaved. Unfortunately I'm back to a hard water area and my black brush turns white from the build up. But worth it!

hi, I have naturally curly hair and i just accidentally stumbled on your blog. so going no poo would be good for my hair? my hair is naturally rlly dry and usually i put some natural oils in it to keep the moisture after shampooing and conditioning. I have two questions. would going no poo on my dry, curly hair make it greasy? also, does Castille soap ((like dr. bronners)) count as shampoo? thanks so much! x

Some of these I can answer and some I can't.

Everyone's hair is different so it is hard to guess what is going to happen to your hair. But I have heard from many people that going no-shampoo is good for curly hair and makes it even curlier. I am sure it might get a little greasy for a while as your scalp adjusts, but your hair/scalp composition is not going to drastically change.

Dr. Bronners is an all natural soap and a lot of no-shampooers use it in place of shampoo and as part of a natural, chemical-free lifestyle.

Hi, I've been no poo for two months. I wash with baking soda and ACV and sometimes conditioner only, every three of four days. But my hair still gets greasy two days after washing and it just seems like my scalp isn't adjusting to this thing at all. When should I get worried? Could I be doing something wrong?

I am a very oily person. I can't go more than 2 days without washing my hair. It might be genetics or because I am still young. But everyone is different.

From what I have observed, the people who can go a week without washing their hair usually only washed it 2 times a week anyways. There is no "goal" when going shampoo free, just finding a balance of what makes your hair feel and look its best.

Shampoo free isn't for everyone, and if you feel like you could go longer when you used shampoo and you liked that, maybe it is time for a change.

Hello its day 2 for me without any shampoo :) and my hair already feels thick and oily - im wondering can I just clean my hair with rosewater everyday cuz I like the smell and it makes me feel girly and no so dirty and also can I use it as a conditioner instead of vinegar?

Rosewater is great for hair and does leave it smelling great. My philosophy is if it is natural its probably okay for hair.

Everyone's hair is different, so you can totally experiment with rosewater instead of apple cider vinegar and find out what works best for you. I like ACV because it conditions the hair and puts back some of what the baking soda stripped out.

Question!! :D I am currently doing a sorta-poo thing (I use a diluted Castile Soap and an ACV rinse).... I am planning on drying my hair. Box dye. Can I use the conditioner that comes with the dye? Or should I do a coconut oil mask instead, or what?? Thanks!!!!

I am totally not an expert on dying hair, but I would use the conditioner included. You are already putting chemicals in your hair with the dye, so you might as well use the included conditioner to make sure everything works out fine! Good luck and I hope it turns out beautiful!

If I go no poo can I still use a deep conditioner leave in conditioner or an oil? Or get rid of all that stuff?

My stance: it is doesn't have silicones and you can prononce all the ingredients, use it.

I am new to this no poo stuff but i am trying to style someone that as been doing it for awhile. Her hair is not holding a curl with a curling iron. What do I do that will help me curl and style her hair?

This is going to sound horrible, but I have no idea.

But instead of using a curling iron, you might want to look into some no-heat curling methods. Those usually take longer (like overnight) but they bend the hair for longer periods of time and might hold a style better.

Do you know if you can use hair dye on no-poo hair? I've been wanting to get my hair dyed for a while, but I also wanna go no-poo. And I don't mean temporary dye, I mean actual permanent dye. Also, can you go no-poo with already-dyed hair? Thanks! xxx

You can go no poo with dyed hair, no problem. If you want to dye your hair I would do it before you go no poo because traditional hair dye has LOTS of chemicals and would throw your new no-poo lifestyle into a tailspin!

So, I would suggest dying your hair first, giving it a few weeks, and then go no-poo. Some people have complained that baking soda strips their hair of the dye, but I am not sure how common that is.

I would recommend reading the live journal linked below. It is in a Q&A format. There is even a "colored treated hair" tag that might have more answers for you. Since I don't dye my hair I am kinda naive about this.

Hello! I've gone cold turkey no-poo a month ago, immediately water only since I have the chance to avoid getting out of the house too often. I have long, thin, lightly wavy hair and I've experienced no problem with the length of my hair, whereas my scalp and the hair on it keeps being greasy and oily. I've never used brushes and I've always let my hair air-dry, but lately I've started brushing, to see if the situation would get better. It didn't, really. Any suggestions?

Oily scalp has always been an issue for me, especially when the weather starts warming up. You are only a month in so it could take a little longer for your scalp to adjust. I would recommend to keep doing what you are doing, including the brushing, and only wash/water your hair ONLY when you need to. Try cold water. Hot water strips your hair of too many oils, causing your scalp to overcompensate, just like with shampoo.

You can also sprinkle baking soda on your roots to help absorb some of the extra oils and make your hair less shiny. It will get better with time, I promise.

In the meantime, try something fun, like HATS!

two more questions. my hair is dry. like really, incredibly, wire-like dry. I added some extra ACV to my mixture. will that help it have no effect at all? also, I haven't been putting anything at all in my hair after I shower and I'm thinking about starting to use some argan oil on my ends. would you recommend that or not? thanks!

ACV will totally help. It will help condition and soften your hair. The results will not be immediate, but over time.

I try to stay away from leave in oils. But you might consider doing a hair mask every few days. Pure argan oil would be a great choice. If you really want to use an oil like a leave-in conditioner, I would suggest sunflower oil or coconut oil. Don't use olive oil though because it is too hard to wash out and will leave your hair stringy and oily instead of sleek.

Hello, so i've been no poo for like, 2 months. My hair before going no poo was frizzy,dry, and very hard to manage, after going to no poo i've realized that my hair has become so soft, not frizzy and so easy to manage! It was amazing, but now my hair has changed, my ends used to be soft and just beautiful, but now they're sort of dry and straw like. I never use heat, and i didn't try anything out of the ordinary, so what could've happened?

It is possible that the end of your hair are not getting enough natural oils. This happens to a lot of people, especially people with long hair. There are a few ways to remedy this:

- brush your hair more often. This sounds "duh" but it is important. I like to use a natural boar bristle brush, but any brush will work. Focus on brushing from the roots all the way down the hair shaft. This will help pull oils from your roots down to the ends of your hair. It will take a few days of dedication before you see results, but if you keep up it will really help. Make it part of your routine before you shower.

- keep baking soda off your ends. Baking soda absorbs oils so keep them away from the hair shaft and focus on those roots. It could be as simple as that.

Is it possible I could use normal vinegar instead of ACV?

You can, but ACV is going to be better for your hair. It is more raw and unfiltered and therefore has some really great conditioning and healthy proprieties. Regular vinegar will strip your hair of oils. ACV helps condition hair.
