nathan-douglas:
He just stared at Norah as she spoke, understanding what she was trying to get at overall. He agreed, it was odd to think that way when you first met them. But he didn’t think she would feel that way once she truly got to know him. It took certain types of people, knowing him fully, to think such a stupid thing of him. Even to those he could most relate to had a hard time actually relating to him. He was terrifying at Damari. Even if also broken “It’s strange.”
Nathan wanted to think that maybe, yeah, he had lost half the memories he had. It would have been easy, to just not have them. But he did have them, and he couldn’t let them go. The nightmares that were made from those memories would not let him forget. That he had a wound that needed avenged “Yeah. That’s true. Time tends to do that.” How could he tell someone he just met that time had not been so kind to him. That every day he would play the good memories over and over again in his head, just wanting that time back. While at night, every bad memory came to cut him down and remind him of who he was, what he actually was. What everyone had ever thought he was.
“I don’t think they would, I think I remember more than they do.” He laughed sadly, shaking his head “ It sucks. I feel like The Men in Black must have wiped their minds.”
“Whiskers, what a…cute name for a cat.” He thought it was typical and cliche, but figured it was better to not say that directly to her, because it just seemed a bit rude. But for the most part he didn’t actually care about all of that, did he? He glanced down trying to figure out if he cared about saying the name was very normal and boring, or saying it was cute.
As she went on he nodded “Maybe.” He felt like most people would defend his family’s actions, instead of just listening to what he was saying about them. Even if he wasn’t being very clear about a lot of it. He was trying his best to be very clear. As Norah spoke on he listen, then shrugged “Right. It is.” She was right, they didn’t know each other. Thinking back he realized it would have been easier if he had just been kidnapped or something. Rather than just being a few minutes away from his family, locked in a mental hospital. And then forgotten about by at least two of those family members, and ignored by another. Nathan gave an uncomfortable smile to her though “Mmm. Well, that is true.” He guessed.
“Right, friends have never been very important to me.” Since most people he was with that could have been friends were not always at the hospital, and if they were, well, they weren’t very great friend material at times. Not all of the people there were bad, most of them actually weren’t. But they were all there for a reason. And it wasn’t because they fit perfectly into the rest of societies little boxes. Staring at Norah he wondered if she was right, was it good to have friends? Or was it better to protect yourself from the potential of someone using you because you can be easily used “It’s fine, you aren’t wrong.” Nathan just didn’t think it was for him.
With the answer about whether they knew who killed her or not he frowned “Aww, that’s terrible. Even after four years? I hate that, when that happens.” He nodded, agreeing with himself. Knowing that plenty of crimes, murders, went unsolved, no matter what. He made a face “Hopefully you won’t run into them.”
Laughing at her thoughts on zombies Nathan nodded, that seemed to be how most people wanted to think of monsters. As the opposite from humans. But she had been murdered, so clearly monsters were more often to be man, than beast. Nathan shifted a bit looking her over before looking away “I don’t know what that is, but it sounds stupid.”
Norah listened to him speak about his memories and the fact that his family probably had forgotten most of them and she frowned briefly. She didn't want to think about how that must feel, to have the people who are supposed to be the most important in your life forget about you, so she could only imagine how Nathan was feeling. "You can refresh their memories then. Memories can be triggered by almost anything; a word, a sound, a smell, a familiar touch... Anything." At the mention of the Men in Black wiping his family's minds, she laughed briefly and nodded. "It would honestly be really cool to have one of those memory erasing pens though."
She heard his reaction to Whisker's name and smiled softly, seeing that he was trying to be nice. "I don't think we agreed on any other names. Which made naming him very hard. So the cliche one won out. But it is cute cause he does have very long whiskers. So it fits him."
Norah sighed lightly as she went over what she had just said out loud, in her head. "Family issues are probably the hardest to deal with." She said in both places, a bit surprised to hear her voice for a second. "There are too many conflicting emotions going on at the same time. Like, you can be mad at them, but also sad and want them to fix whatever the problem is, but you also don't want them to breathe your air, and give you an explanation for it all, all at the same time." She said with a small chuckle. "It will always be complicated and never have a right way to solve things."
She thought of her friends and the conflicting circles she had; or had when she was alive. Norah really didn't know where she stood with them anymore cause they hadn't seen one another. "From past experience, I've found that it's better to have a few really good ones over the fake ones who just use you and take advantage.. Rare and meaningful things come few in number, don't they?" Norah loved the group of friends that she shared with her sister but it felt a bit shifty to her at times, like they would pick a twin to like more at that time, when they didn't have to. So when did finally find friends that were just hers and weren't tied to Naomi, she valued them a bit more cause she didn't have to share or try to make them like her more than her sister; they liked her for her. "I think that everyone needs at least one person outside of their family on their side."
Norah nodded her head in agreement as he talked about her murder. "I wish I remembered at least some of it... Maybe I could've filled in some things that the police missed or something.. Anything.. But nothing." She said with a heavy sigh. "I can't avoid them if I don't know who it was. All I know is whoever it was will be shocked that I'm here. So that'll be telling, right?"
Norah grinned widely as he answered her question about The Walking Dead. "It's a television show." She said with a small laugh. "About what would happen if there ever was a zombie apocalypse... It brings up some good points about surviving and maintaining your humanity when the human race is losing hope and probably becoming extinct.." She said and ran a hand through her hair. "I think I saw the finale of the third season back then but now, I don't even know how many season aired now or if it's even still on the air."
