Does anybody want to know a fun and detailed technical fact about the way Minecraft works that I only know because I spend my spare time pushing Minecraft to its absolute theoretical limits
YES!
I don’t play Minecraft but I do love specific knowledge like this, this sounds interesting
THE COUNCIL HAS SPOKEN AND THE COUNCIL HAS VOTED YES
Okay so. When you launch minecraft, the game stitches every texture in the game including mods and resource packs into a single image called the texture atlas. The size of this atlas increases as you add more new textures. This is what the vanilla minecraft texture atlas looks like:
I've seen people ask the question before "what is the maximum number of mods you can put on Minecraft. " The answer to this is that there is is no maximum - you can add as many mods as you computer can handle. But what DOES have a maximum size is the texture atlas. If you add enough mods, especially mods that add large textures, eventually you will overrun the texture atlas. When you launch the game, it creates a texture atlas and bases the size off how many textures there are. The atlas is only ever as big as it needs to be to fit all of the textures in all of the blocks and items in the game, so the more mods you add, the bigger your atlas needs to be. The absolute maximum size for the Minecraft texture atlas is 16,384x16,384 pixels. That sounds like a lot, but it's actually not THAT hard to overrun. My Minecraft save, the one I refer to as "the abomination" has actually overrun its texture atlas size.
Here's the caveat, though: for some reason, if you have an NVIDIA graphics card, your maximum texture atlas size is doubled. NVIDIA cards - even lower powered ones - have a maximum texture atlas size of 32,768 x 32,768. This is also relevant if you use higher resolution Minecraft textures like 64x64 or 256x256. Using a 256x texture pack, you'll start overrunning the texture atlas as soon as you add basically any mods if you're on a non-Nvidia GPU.
My new laptop has an LED in the power button. Seperate from the LED keyboard, the power button has a small single LED that changes to red and white seemingly at random.
This laptop also has this Fancy Mode called Hybrid Graphics mode. This combines the integrated graphics of the processor with the actual 5070 TI GPU in the laptop and smart-switches between them for different tasks, to save power (as the 50 series cards are extremely power hungry).
So I looked up the LED in the power button, and found out the color changes denote which GPU the device is using. The white LED means it's on the integrated GPU (which is AMD), and red means it's using the actual NVIDIA card. It's fairly smart about this, and when you launch a game, it always switches to the NVIDIA card.
So I launched my Abomination on my new laptop, and I got this:
I googled this and stared at it for a long minute. I've seen this error before caused by broken mods, but the exact same instance launches fine on my desktop I fiddled with it for a bit and couldn't figure out what on earth was causing this. The next time I launched the game I did my best to watch the logs, and caught the word "exceeds" flying by. After searching the log I found the error: requested texture atlas size exceeds allowed size of 16,384x16,384. And then I realized: the LED in my power button has been white this whole time. The "smart switching" in the hybrid graphics tech didn't pick up on minecraft as a "real game," so didn't launch it on the 5070ti - it launched it on the integrated AMD GPU, with the 16,384x16,384 max texture atlas.
I turned off the hybrid graphics, turned on the 5070ti all the time, and the abomination loaded without a single issue.
oh I can elaborate on the abomination later. you all don’t wanna know about the abomination
YES WE DO (<- has heard about the abomination before and will never stop cheerleading about it)
I would like to hear about the abomination, please… I like doing mildly cursed and ill-advised things with computers
See the really funny thing is that any time I’ve so much as vaguely mentioned the abomination on any other platform and provided any info about it people have gotten REALLY mad at me. Do NOT tell the people on Reddit you have a Minecraft modpack that won’t launch with less than 48 GB of Ram allocated they get really mad at you. I’m eepy but I promise to tell everyone about the abomination tomorrow
Some screenshots from The Abomination this fine evening for your viewing pleasure
So, as promised, here’s an explanation of The Abomination and why it is the way it is.
The Abomination started probably 5 or 6 years ago as a custom version of All The Mods 6 on 1.16.5. I started with ATM6 and just kept bolting stuff on, tossing in basically anything that looks vaguely interesting. I have a particular interest in nature/animal mods and furniture mods, so it’s focused on those. I’ve been limping the abomination forwards year by year, generally not moving to a new Minecraft version until all the biggest names have updated. I’ve been on 1.16.5, 1.18.2, and currently living on 1.20.1. It’s gonna take an act of god to get me past 1.20.1 especially as the modding scene has fractured so heavily over NeoForge (XKCD competing standards comic). I’ve used all sorts of crazy methods to maintain *roughly* the same mods since 1.16.5, it’s kind of a ship of Theseus at this point as so many mods from 1.16.5 no longer exist and so many things I had now didn’t exist then, but I’ve honestly tried to keep most of the same stuff.
Minecraft is written in Java, which people who have a better understanding of programming than me routinely point out is just not an amazing language to program a game in. One of the quirks it picked up from being written Java is that it - like one other game I can think of which engages in this insane methodology (✨cities skylines✨) loads *every block in the game into RAM on launch.* To be clear, that’s not every block like every dirt block - anyone who’s played Minecraft will know that whatever wizardry it uses means the performance is unimpacted by the volume of placed blocks - but every UNIQUE block. The more unique blocks you have - if you’ve played and you know what this means, think everything you can see in JEI - into RAM. The more unique blocks, the more RAM you need.
Vanilla Minecraft can run on the potatoest of potato machines, partly because it only has something like 200 or 250 unique blocks (I may be way overshooting that number I’m estimating right now). Every mod you add that adds blocks adds to Minecraft’s ram consumption.
The Abomination started its life with around 300 mods - mostly what was in AMT6 - and I could more or less get it running on 12 gigs of allocated RAM. As it’s grown over the years this number has increased, but the core of the abomination, as massive as it is, will still get off the ground with ~16 gigs allocated without too much trouble.
The primary culprits to the situation in which I currently find myself are two mods which do dynamic asset generation - Every Compat and Paladin’s Furniture. Dynamic generation in Minecraft is a coding trick that mods can pull to procedurally create blocks and assets on launch based on other available blocks. This allows a mod using dynamic generation to, for example, guarantee that a piece of furniture or adds will be available in every wood type, including modded ones, in every hypothetical player’s game by dynamically generating those assets at launch based on every block with the #wood tag and using the already existing textures, instead of the programmer of that mod having to manually create every asset for every wood type they know of which would inevitably leave out someone’s mod somewhere and creates other compatibility problems.
Every Compat generates every imaginable wooden item in the game in every wood type which exists in the game. Paladin’s Furniture does the same - generating a version for every wood, and actually several others - block type in the game of a broad set of furniture pieces. This means that having these two mods present massively increases the number of unique blocks in a pack - a single new wood type creates a full Paladin and Every Compat set, so it creates a couple hundred new blocks every time.
Because I also play with the REST of the utterly obscene situation happening here, including Silent Gear (many, many wood types) Biomes O Plenty & Biomes you’ll go/gone (another ton of wood types), Dynamics, etc etc etc, there are hundreds of wood types in my game. And Every Compat & Paladin’s Furniture dynamically generate sets of several hundred blocks a piece for each of them. The situation rapidly becomes exponential.
The last count I saw my unique block types were in the hundreds of thousands - I think it’s either 200,000 or 600,000, I don’t remember - and my JEI is close to 2,000 pages long. The massive RAM needs are entirely because of this obscene volume of unique blocks. If I remove just those two mods - every Compat and paladin’s furniture - the RAM needs PLUMMET.
The reason this makes everyone so angry is that there’s very strange misconception in a lot of Minecraft technical support communities that no Minecraft save will ever, no matter what you do, need more than 4 GB of ram allocated (already patently false as the newest All The Mods packs don’t launch well with less than 8), that assigning more than that amount of ram is absolutely never necessary, is always stupid and wrong, and will break your game, and that an error that says “you don’t have enough ram assigned” can somehow actually magically mean “you have too much ram assigned” if you have more than 4-6 GB allocated. I have played and tweaked and tested the Abomination at length, and I know for a fact that it needs the amount of ram I feed it because, what do you know, if I give it less it won’t launch and it tells me very clearly that it won’t launch because I have don’t have enough ram allocated, and as soon as I give it what it wants it suddenly starts working again. However, everyone else literally thinks I am either stupid or lying about this, so it is literally impossible for me to troubleshoot, discuss, or seek help for any OTHER problems with this modpack in any public Minecraft space. As soon as they see how much ram is allocated to it they start yelling at me that no Minecraft modpack has ever or will ever need that much ram, that I’ve broken my game by allocating that much ram, and that having that much ram allocated is the cause of it running poorly and I need to assign it 4 GB instead of 40 and it’ll surely run better. I then explain to them that that’s not possible because it literally won’t boot with any less and tells me very clearly that it’s because it doesn’t have enough ram allocated, but somehow “the game continuously tells me that it doesn’t have enough allocated ram until I give it this amount, at which point it stops giving me that error” STILL reads to everyone as “well it must be telling you that because you gave it too much ram and if you just keep giving it less you’ll stop seeing the error that says it doesn’t have enough.” It absolutely baffles me, and it’s entirely down to this weird conception that Minecraft NEVER needs more ram no matter what (this is very common on Reddit) despite that just…not being even sort of true.
There ARE problems with assigning Minecraft massive amounts of Ram due to what Java calls garbage collection, which is a whole other uber-complex can of Minecraft worms, but I have a mile long string of slightly customized Java launch arguments I stole from someone on Reddit that keeps my garbage collection situation under control. But nonetheless it makes people Extremely Angry, so i basically have to simply play it in solitude, troubleshoot it (and its ever growing, extremely plentiful, errors) myself, and explain it in deep detail to anyone who wants to know about it to head off them yelling at me.
I’ll post some more technical details on it tomorrow including my shaders, JVM args, actual mod count, etc, tomorrow.
But I’m gonna post this poll because it’s gonna be fun as hell
You’ve read all of the above. The Abomination WILL NOT launch without 40-44 GB of RAM allocated to its JVM profile. It is absolutely unplayable if you do not have 64 GB of ram in your computer. Bearing that in mind, is there anyone out there with a computer that can actually run this bitch that would like me to upload a ZIP file of the abomination so you can at least try to play it
Yes bring that bitch on
I am not touching that with a 10 foot pole
Clicky clicky button
I can try to yank out the Compat mods mentioned above and try to get it back to 12-16 GB territory as well and upload a version like that if there’s any interest.
That's amazing. Good luck on your abomination, I mean it!
BTW, for anyone wondering: Minecraft being written in Java is why this dual-GPU issue happened.
OP I HAVE 128GB OF RAM IN MY COMPUTER (LONG STORY, IT USED TO BE A DATACENTER SERVER)!! send that monstrosity my way i would love to :D
This got 1K notes overnight which is crazy thank you @foone for that. And I am floored to see that apparently 300ish people who answered the poll actually want this thing??? BUT THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN AND I SHALL DELIVER.
The shaderpack has attracted the most attention as well as the screenshots in general. So here's some good news: the stuff in the screenshots is actually pretty disconnected from the massive RAM needs and can be run on any computer good enough to run minecraft with shaders! The shader pack is Complimentary Unbound with Euphoria Patches running on Oculus. Here is a download for the shader settings I'm using - Oculus just saves shaderpack settings in a text file, so dropping this in your shaders folder is all you need to do. I mostly have everything at medium with the skies pumped and all the rainbow settings enabled. The rainbow trees in the image aren't from the shader but are a default biome in Biomes O' Plenty. I recommend downloading Nature's Compass also to find it as it's a rarer biome.
Here is the modlist in plain text. A few people asked for this. Do not run this full list unmodified without using my profile as it it will probably never boot. You need my configs, modernfix settings, and JVM args to make this bitch run.
Here are the JVM args I use in plain text. If you download the Abomination from the zip below, you won't need these - they're included in that profile. However they make a HUGE difference in the performance of any modpack and can be used with any modpack you like. Add them to the JVM arguments section of your instance in your launcher of choice.
READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD THE LINK TO THE ABOMINATION BELOW.
THE ABOMINATION WILL NOT LAUNCH WITH LESS THAN 64 GB OF RAM ON YOUR COMPUTER. THE ABOMINATION WILL NOT LAUCH WITH A NON-NIVIDIA GPU.
Prism Launcher, which I use, has a mechanism for exporting modpack zips. However this misses something in the process and when I've tried to use it for this before the resulting modpack has crashed on launch after importing. For this reason I'm doing this the nuclear way and am simply zipping and uploading my Prism instance itself. YOU HAVE TO HAVE PRISM LAUNCHER TO USE THIS. FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO BRING THE ABOMINATION TO LIFE!
Install Prism Launcher. I mean if you aren't already using this, why not?
Connect your Minecraft account. Prism will prompt for this.
In prism launcher, click "settings"
4. Click "Java"
5. For the sake of getting as close as we can to making this work, I'm gonna recommend downloading the exact same Java version I'm using, whether or not you have one already, lest there be some gremlin in there I haven't considered. Click the "Management" tab
6. Click "Download," select "Adoptium" and then 17.0.16.8
7. Click "Download."
8. Return to the main prism launcher page again. Click "folders" and the "instances."
9. Paste and unzip the zip file you find below into this folder. THE ZIP HAS 300,000 FILES IN IT. It is going to take a million years to unzip. This is normal. Get used to things related to this pack taking a million years. Just wait for it to finish.
10. Once it's unzipped, be sure to delete the zip file. Close and reopen prism launcher. You should have an instance showing for The Abomination. Select "edit."
11. Click "settings" and then "auto detect." THE MODPACK WILL NOT LAUNCH IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS! Because I'm uploading the instance straight from my computer, the Java path it comes with is going to be one for my computer. You need to change the path so it matches the path on YOUR computer.
12. Select the Eclipse Adoptium Java we just downloaded and click "ok."
13. You are now ready to launch the abomination. May god have mercy on your soul.
The abomination will take around 6-7 minutes to launch and 30+ minutes to create or load a world. THIS IS NORMAL. It is not stuck. I recommend keeping Prism's running log open while the game launches to reassure yourself of this. Start the launch and then go do a couple chores and come back.
This monstrosity is in what I would describe as a fragile state of equilibrium. Right now it works and it's actually shockingly stable. Do not update mods. Do not change the JVM args. Do not change anything until you have a solid understanding of everything happening here. I can't promise any kind of technical support for this beast, because its state is simply too messy and fragile. BUT. if you unzip it exactly as it is, and run it on a computer that can run it, it should launch and run without major issue other than being extremely slow to launch.
I hope everyone enjoys. The Abomination ZIP download. I'll need to fiddle a bit to get the lower impact version running, so I'll upload that later.
it took an hour to generate the world but it works!!!!! above 30fps, too!

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
I couldn't remember the word "doorknob" ten minutes ago.

Me talking to the founding fathers: While your system was fundamentally rooted in democracy, it failed to account for the rapid change in society’s growth and vast diversity that would come from it. It also has no concrete definition for how serious to take it, making it easy for the greedy to take advantage of.
George washington eating his third fruit gummy snack: The idea was to hand the government into the hands of the people. Although, I doubt with such a large union of people that it’d ever be possible to reach one ideal we can all agree on. However, if a man was corrupted in power, it is the duty of the american people to remove him for the health of the nation.

This was the museum I went to often in my childhood. I'm no longer able to visit unless I visit family, but this place holds a special place in my heart.
As stated in the article, they hold around 7 million artifacts- many of which are orphaned fossils, with the museum taking in collections that otherwise would have been trashed.
Please consider buying a Paleozoic Pal, but I'll also leave a direct donation link as well.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.
oh shit
As the OP of this post, I’m going to threaten that if this gets to one million notes by the 10 year anniversary on 1 June 2026, one year from today, I will get a lower back tattoo of the loch ness bear monster.
Y'all know what to do Tumblr.
i am massively overdue for a very very good week where not a single bad thing happens and everything is easy
reblog to give prev a very good week where not a single bad thing happens and everything is easy
sorry im never going to be over the fact that ffxiv dragons are space aliens it's the funniest way anyone has handled dragons in a fantasy setting
space aliens ☝️ whose planet was destroyed by space alien robots. It must be said
only survived because one (1) guy went. hey guys this space robot shit is stupid they're gonna kick our ass. i'm leaving with exactly 7 of my eggs BYE. then just raw dog flew through space until he found a planet
then he met God and she was like "hey wanna live on my special planet and raise your kids here? In exchange for protecting it from [redacted]?"
And he was all "fuck yeah, thanks God"
And that's how ffxiv got dragons
Also the space alien dragons are functionally immortal, reproduce asexually, and don't have genders (they pick their pronouns for speaking with mortals based on vibes alone). Also the one time we've had canonical mortal/dragon romance it ended in consensual vore.
@gryphye this is the first post to make me want to try an FF game, is it like this is making it sound?
Come find out!
The critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award winning Heavensward expansion AND ALSO award winning Stormblood expansion up to level 70 for free with no restrictions on playtime.
Devastating to have more evidence that done IS better than perfect
Additionally, findings indicate that the act of doing shows you that you were not seeking perfection, you were fearing inadequacy
@grey-and-lavender
#oh that last line gutted me #is there a place between perfect and failure?
Good news! There is!
Bad news! It is called 'done'

I know it's not the silly stuff I usually post, but please hear me out, as it's important to me.
It all started with the Russian government making it illigal to talk about queerness amongst children, which was greatly celebrated by the homophobic majority back in the day. Later, they made it punishable for queer adults to publicly share their stories amongst other adults too, which was also celebrated.
On 30th November of 2023, the "lgbtq+ organization" was titled as "extremist", along with all the pro-Ukranian and anti-war organizations, which led to radical, aggressive censorship of all media in Russia. Then, big western social media were banned, along with monetization on them, which made activism for queer/pro-Ukrainian Russians even more difficult than it used to be, as it's required to dox yourself to the government by putting your "content creator" number (obtained from the official public services app "Госуслуги" by giving your sensitive information) in your BIO to get monetized legally. That has affected the right to privacy of not only Russian activists, but also of every Russian content creator.
12 days ago, on September 1st, 2025, they published a new law that punishes those who GOOGLE SEARCH unfavorable information about the government, "extremist" media, or anything that might suggest opposition to the Russian government and its actions. It's not just illegal to "seem" anti-war, or pro-gay, or pro-trans anymore — It's the MINDSET that's being criminalized right now. It's illegal to QUESTION, it's illegal to RESEARCH, it's illegal to INFO CHECK, it's illegal to EDUCATE YOURSELF, it's illegal to even TRY to FIND OUT THE TRUTH, even if you're doing it ON YOUR OWN.
So when I tell you,
It's NEVER about your safety and it's NEVER about "the kids",
you better fucking believe me.
