My Tips For Making New Work
Over the past couple of months, I’ve been working towards a new exhibition which will be happening at HOME Manchester, Friday 13th November - Sunday 10th January, exploring the idea of Manmade vs. Nature Made.
As the exhibition is getting ready, I’m reflecting over what I’ve learned during this process and I thought it may (or may not who knows!) be helpful to share with others what I’ve found;
1. Nike did good with that tag line
You can spend all of your time making boards on Pinterest and planning (which can be useful although I do wonder sometimes if it stops our individuality if we rely on it too much) but when it comes down to it, the best way forward is just to do it and see what happens. Also do it no matter if it might seem like a strange idea, you never know what may come out of it!
[Although I like this shot, it wasn’t the one I wanted to use. Different lighting techniques were tried and tested, various angles were used, more objects were added and then I was happy to find one of the shots for the exhibition.]
You have to trust your own intuition. Plans change and you need to be able to react in the moment. It’s often then that the most unusual shots come out. Figure out your style and try to stay true to that. Everyone has their own and it’s so refreshing to see when people are doing something a bit different.
3. You don’t have to spend loads
I like this one! This applies to your equipment and the subject matter. You don’t need the fanciest camera and the most expensive lights. Natural light is there and its free and cameras come in all shapes and sizes. The best advice I can give is learning how to use the equipment that you do have and try out different light sources and how it affects your image.
Fear can be a tricky one and can often stump me when I’m doing work. Much time deliberating and questioning myself and my subject matter. This sometimes is a necessary part of the work, you almost have to face that, learn why you are doing what you’re doing and then you can work past it. Most of my final pieces for the exhibition were made when I wasn’t thinking too much about the final product and I was having fun.
