Some pics from the recent joint Illustration and Graphic Communication trip to Rome.
First year illustrators have been working on abstract record covers responding to experimental music. Tracks included Delia Derbyshire, Three Trapped Tigers and Bonobo.
First years doing a spot of location drawing in the picturesque and historical Northampton Market Square.
Showtime! Last night, first year Illustration students had the private view for their end of year show in the university’s Avenue Gallery. The exhibition, entitled Show and Tell, was the culmination of the year’s work and showcased work from across all the projects they undertook.Â
It’s show season here at the University of Northampton! Second year Illustration and Graphic Design students can be seen here setting up an exhibition of their work from the Explorative Practice module. The exhibition, entitled HERE, is taking place in a disused shop space in the town market which they have moved into in a guerilla-style takeover!
Pics from a recent trip to London where we visited the Guardian studios for a great talk by art director Sarah Habershon about how the paper commissions and uses illustration. We also dropped by the studios of Le Gun and Nick Scott who showed us the drawings he’s currently working on for an animated music video. Also visited Hato press where they talked through their paper range, binding techniques and riso processes - a pretty inspiring day overall!
Bookbinding workshop with the wonderful Cecile!
Third years led some fantastic mask and model making workshops for second years as part of their NN residency last month!
Lecturer Zoe Taylor’s article on Marie Jacotey’s drawings for McQ McQueen in the new look Varoom (illustration magazine).
Derek from the AOI visited to give advice on all things professional from promoting your work to pricing it and negotiating contracts - all essential stuff!
Experimental Practice work in progress from second years, exploring Northampton as a starting point for self-directed work - their show ‘Here’ is coming up soon!
Work above by Kim, Ollie, Lauren, Jen, Katie, Mel and Beth.
Lecturer Zoe Taylor’s Varoom article on the Year 24 Group - the young women who revolutionised shojo manga in the 70s.
Illustrator Rachel Lillie speaking about how she developed her practice.Â
One day character design workshop with Will Sweeney.
Great talk by Jonathan Barnbrook who collaborated with David Bowie to produce his last few album sleeves. He discussed his design process ‘if it hasn’t been difficult, there’s something wrong, you have to vomit it out, twist your soul!’ and political work ‘does it change anything? Society doesn’t work like that...’ and his work with Adbusters and Occupy London whose logo he designed. He also spoke about his exhibition-design work with museums and his fascination with type - its ability to reveal society, the difference between pastiching and interpreting the past and the poetry of type as ‘an expression of language’. He also gave a bit of portfolio advice - ‘rather than show a bit of everything, it should your reveal your passions and personality’.
Graduate Robbie Spencer came back to give tutorials and talk about how he developed his career as a concept artist.
Talk by Gareth Lindsay about his work with Europa design group and his Evening Class initiative, exploring collaboration and new approaches to design education. He also spoke about Europa’s Loughborough research project and collaboration with illustrator Peter Nenchini as well as the complexities and ethics of doing design work within communities.
