Does anyone know of cheap/free animation software for hand-drawn 2d animation? Preferably with onion skin/light table function. For those who are animating: What’s your program of choice?

I’m just curious what’s out there :)

After an eternity I actually have the time to look into other animation programs, so I thought I share my finding in case anyone wants to start animating without having to pay a lot of money for professional animation software:

Today I got Krita, it’s completely free and an open source program mainly meant for drawing and painting but it also comes with a pretty solid animation feature. 

Here’s a very rough and sketchy animation I did in the program: (and under the cut you can find some of my thoughts on Krita)

things I like: First of all: The pencil brush feels amazing to draw with, I really enjoyed sketching this out. The program is easy to understand for the most part, the timeline needs a bit of time to get used to if you’ve never seen an animation program before, but it shouldn’t take too long to get comfortable with it. For me it felt kind of like a hybrid of the timeline of Animate CC and TVPaint. I really like that you can give each frame a different color on the timeline too, that can help keep track of the keys, extremes and breakdowns. There is an Onion Skin mode and you can select how many frames before and after are to be shown as well as in which color and with how much transparency.  If you are on a hold or an empty frame you can toggle with one button if a new frame is created when you draw or if the previous key drawing is edited. (it’s called ‘Auto-Frame Mode’ here, so annoying if programs don’t have that). Krita also ran pretty smoothly so far, it only crashed once while rendering. (Apparently there had been a huge update recently which got rid of a lot of bugs and made the overall performance a lot better, but I can’t say anything about that since I haven’t used the older versions)

things that could be better imo: I had to adjust the workspace and shortcuts a bit before I could start, but that’s something I almost always have to do with new programs. Rearranging everything was no hassle at least and pretty self-explanatory, although sometimes the interface felt a bit clunky. Some of the dockers are too big and I wish I could scale them down even further to save screen space.  What I don’t like about the timeline is that you can’t see the amount of hold frames each drawing has in one glance. You either have to count them out or do the maths with the frame numbers of the keys. (To be fair, Animate doesn’t show that either, I’m just spoiled by TVP where it shows each number for the drawings, a little thumbnail and the amount of hold frames after each drawing in the timeline) So far the video rendering options are pretty limited and gifs don’t support transparency. (though you can always just render a png sequence and import that into another program for editing)

TL;DR: For what I can tell so far, Krita feels like a pretty solid tool to get into hand-drawn animation and is definitely worth looking into. I’m going to test it a bit more and see how it handles coloring, effects and audio/lip syncing, but as off now it seems pretty good to me.
