Court picket for Sweets Way wins first victory
On Monday 23 March the Revolutionary Communist Group joined with residents, housing campaigners and activists in a picket of Barnet Court. An injunction in the name of Annington Homes had been served on a string of organisations who have been occupying Sweets Lane estate in Totteridge. Annington Homes is wholly owned by the private equity firm Terra Firma Capital Partners which is headed by the financier and speculator Guy Hands.
Barnet Council in collusion with Annington evicted 153 households on February 13 and most have been placed in entirely unsuitable, run-down, cramped conditions out of the borough where their children go to school and nursery. They are leading the fight back to reclaim their homes. Annington Homes issued the injunction against the occupation of the estate on Thursday with a summons to appear in court on Monday.
The judge today said that it is entirely unjust and unrealistic for a defence to be prepared in three day and adjourned the hearing until Monday 30 March.

Help us protest to the Whittington Hospital Board at their monthly open board meeting. The hospital board are intent on shrinking services and continuing with redundancies.
Come with us to the public board meeting where we will speak and represent local people who want to protect their local hospital from privatisation and more cuts. The last time we went there the board refused to engage and walked out of the room! This time we will get our point on the agenda in advance. Come and support us so that we can get our voices heard.

A film and discussion event highlighting the threats of cuts and privatisation at the Whittington Hospital.
This is at a time when our local hospital is under constant attack, with ongoing job losses, privatisation and rumours circulating in the media on an almost weekly basis, about which department is under threat next.
We will be showing ‘The Susie Long Story’„ a film from Ireland which portrays the tragic realities of a two-tier health system, where those who have private health insurance get to skip the queue, while the working class who do not have access to insurance face life-threatening consequences. This is the kind of reality that we will be facing here in Britain unless we stop the creeping privatisation that is underway.

Another excellent stall today outside Tottenham Jobcentre - against the sanctions they impose on people claiming benefits there. We have discovered that Tottenham Jobcentre uses the most sanctions in the whole of north London!
We spoke to lots of different people coming in and out and heard about their treatment at the hands of the Jobcentre.
One guy explained that when he was sanctioned by Tottenham Jobcentre he was left with no money to buy food. When he asked the Jobcentre to give him a letter so that he could go to the Food Bank they refused. The reason… because he had been sanctioned!!
There is absolutely no doubt that the decisions of the Department for Work & Pensions and the actions of Jobcentres are punitive and resulting in destitution and poverty for the people most in need in our society.
We are going to protest regularly to keep the pressure on Tottenham Jobcentre to explain their actions and build a campaign against this.

6.11.14: Today we had a stall and noisy protest outside Tottenham Jobcentre. We were protesting about the punitive sanctions imposed on people claiming Job Seekers Allowance in Tottenham.
Tottenham Jobcentre issues sanctions at a rate that is well above the London average. And this is not a new problem. During November 2012 - June 2013 they issued 45% more sanctions than the London average!
People going in and out of the Jobcentre were really supportive and thankful for the opportunity to speak up and start the fight back.
As one person who came out of the Jobcentre said “I’ve been holding this in for so long, but now I’ve seen you lot, I want to scream and shout about the way I’ve been treated”.
Join us in saying no to all sanctions and cuts. Get involved in building a real fight back!

At our stall on 6.11.14 protesting about Job Seeker Allowance sanctions outside Tottenham Jobcentre we met Michelle Moseley who came over to our stall and stayed for the duration. After Michelle’s council tax benefits were recently taken away by Haringey Council she took them to the Supreme Court and won!!

28.10.14: Excellent film showing of 'Cathy Come Home in Archway this evening. "Jeremy Sandford's drama about a young family's slide into homelessness and poverty was a defining moment in 1960s television. The controversy generated by Cathy Come Home led to public outrage at the state of housing in Britain". The sad truth is that the film made you realise that the current housing crisis is just as devastating to our communities as it ever was. But after the film showing we were lifted by current struggles to fight back from the Focus E15 Campaign and others. Creative ideas were shared to organise the fight back! Another Victory for the Focus E15 Campaign! On 2 October, FRFI supporters joined over one hundred other supporters outside Bow County Court for the second eviction hearing of Newham Council versus the occupied social centre which was set up on the Carpenters Estate by the Focus E15 Campaign. Russell Brand, who has visited the centre and lent his support to the fight against homelessness in London , was present as was commentator, journalist and Labour party member Owen Jones. The chanting and speeches were led by those supporters of FRFI who have attended and organised the regular Focus E15 Saturday street events in Stratford for the past year. The Court agreement with Focus E15 was that the social centre on Carpenters Estate will be vacated on 7 October and the council will bring no charges. The campaign and its supporters, many of them mums and kids, then marched to occupy East Thames housing association. After that the march made its noisy way to the Housing Office, which had locked its doors. Finally everybody arrived at the social centre on Carpenters Estate to enjoy good communal cooking together. The events of the day increased the number of people who are determined to take a stand for social housing rights. The message is clear, social housing is a right, take to the streets and carry on the fight.
