➥ Generals
generals tend to be apart of the commanding faction within the Northern army. they’re involved in all discussions of tactics & strategies. having a direct line to the king’s ear as well as being those who are tasked with fulfilling their king’s commands within the lower factions. These men are limited, though they tend to be the lords & ladies of respectable & strong northern houses. GreatJon Umber, Roose Bolton, Rickard Karstark are examples of Generals within Robb’s command.
➥ Battle Guard
while the greatest guard known to the king in the north is his direwolf, Grey Wind, the faction that accompanies the giant wolf in the task to protect the king is known as the Battle Guard. A term simply used to differentiate the cultures between the Northern King’s Guard & the King’s Guard of the seven kingdoms. Members of Robb’s battle guard varied & grew upon gaining allies & losing them. Within the Battle Guard itself there are 2 factions. The first having a more direct line of protection for the king. These guards were always on standby, in and out of battle & were known to be the last line of defense to the king. These members were: SmallJon Umber, Dacey Mormont, Theon Greyjoy, Patrek Mallister, & Ser Wendel Manderly. Olyvar Frey was often within close ranks of these members, being Robb’s Squire.
The second faction were those that accompanied both Robb and the first faction into battle. They were often within sight but not AS close to the king as the others. When battle plans were enlayed, the Battle Guard IS ALWAYS with the King. These members are: Lucas Blackwood, Robin Flint, Ser Perwyn Frey, Daryn Hornwood, Eddard Karstark, Torrhen Karstark, Owen Norrey, various Frey boys and eventually Ser Raynald Westerling.
➥ Warriors
There are multiple factions within the warriors that make up the most egregious & deadly of the Northern army. Split into 4 groups you have your standard warriors, with whom wield two-handed weapons, whether that be claymores, battle axes or war hammers is left up to the warrior himself. The other three factions are elite warriors said to be chosen by the old gods themselves.
Berserkers (inspired by berserkirs of norse mythos): These warriors were said to hold power given to them by the Old Gods. Berserkers were often the first to rush into battle and one of the most deadliest. According to rumors spread, they could not be harmed by fire (a fact that lies incorrect, however none of them would be caught denying it) and were said to hold a rage that would allow them only to see red. Becoming a Berserker was ultimately incredibly difficult and required specialization, worship and intense training just to scrape the surface.
Ulfhednar: These warriors were extremely rare. Said to be born with the ability and unable to be learned. They made up only 1% of the Northern army and it was rumored that Robb Stark himself possessed the spirit. Ulfhednar is a warrior with the soul of the wolf & only those who were descendents of that Starks were ever found to inherit the abilities. These warriors, while similar to Berserkers possessed the soul of a wolf and thus, the abilities of one in battle.
Shieldmaidens: Elite warriors, ALL female. These women were brutal in their abilities. Carrying a large shield emblazoned by the direwolf sigil of the Starks or the other houses of the North. These women were extremely powerful and often were within the forefront, behind the beserkers.
➥ Army
The whole of the army itself is made up of the Warriors, the Battle Guard, Cavalry, Archers and Swordsman. The bulk of the army was of the North, but having marched south Robb’s cousins of the Trident joined in. this offered a varying amount of abilities & specialties that made Robb’s army successful, not just the strategies created at the war tables.
